Focus Car Seat Capability?

Hello everyone, I am a new member. I am looking for a car and have been watching the Focus since it came out in '99. The thing is that my spouse is expecting our second child in a couple of months and we will need a vehicle that is capable of carrying two carseats (one rear-facing) and two adults.

We currently have a 96 Probe GT (soon to be for sale,) an old Geo Prism that just got wrecked and (the ever-popular-with-families) new mini van. The cars have worked well for us for years, but neither have the space for a rear facing child seat in the back while an adult sits up front. We aren't big people, but we are both above average height (5'10" and 5'8") so need the front seats fairly far back.

Clearly one of the cars on our lists is a 5-door SVT. Also (but of lesser interest to me) is the wagon. Will I have enough space in either of these? Anyone out there with one (or two) under one year children cart the families around in their SVT?

Thanks for your advice.

313-Matt

ps - I am also over at ProbeTalk. Being a bit of a Probe tuner, I imagine I'll end up with some "adjustments" if we end up with a Focus.

The focus would be right up your alley. I am 6 ft 2 and when I move the seat all the way back
I have a little trouble reaching the pedals. And also there is adequate room in the back for
a rear facing car seat. Hope this help and happy hunting

to the boards.

Well, I have taken the plunge. Tomorrow I go to pick up a 05 ST.

We looked at the SVT, but they are a little more expensive, and my spouse was not happy with the EPA mileage. So hopefully the ST will be quick enough. I am stepping down from a Probe with 162hp (before mods) so hopefully the ST with a claimed 160 won't be too much of a hit.

Speaking of the Probe, if you want one (or know somone that does) it is up for sale over at
Probetalk. Great car - I am sad to sell it.

Thanks for the tips, and I'll be around.

The ST is the replacement for the SVT but the SVT came with a few more emenities in the options list is all and it had an extra gear. As for quickness... the SVT and the ST is a pretty equal match for the most part.

I have never raced a Probe but I think the ST will be a VERY good match for your probe...

Welcome to FocusFanatics.com!!

I am around 6'5" tall and no problem with the seat not going back enough, you will both have plenty of room.

Congrats on the upcoming baby and new purchase!!!The probe is a much sportier feel (personally) as I've drove multiple GT's and some new ST's also. Both cars are great, you won't be disappointed in the ST by any means.......

Well, this car has heated seats, mirrors and couple other things. It was enough to get us to shell out a few extra bucks. Good to hear that the ST and SVT are close in actual speed.

The other thing about the SVT was the suspension. My understanding is that the ST is more of a "daily driver" suspension. The biggest mistake I made with my Probe was putting the sport/lowered springs on it. My spouse has frequently refused to drive/ride in the Probe because the suspension was so stiff. Great for the track - totally sucks for Detroit roads.

Please don't get me wrong, though - it the handling is not flat, I'll be looking for sway bars.

Any y'all have that sort of stuff 'round here? j/k, I know the forum will help me out.

Well, that is certainly good news. :)

I bought my Probe GT for the 2.5L Mazda V6 engine. I bought (err, am buying) the ST for the Mazda 2.3L I4 and the back seats.

I can certainly say that the overall length of the vehicles are very similar. The ST sits really high (in comparison.) It's probably good, but I'll miss the V6 roar and the leather seats.

Again, that is great to hear. It's tough to leave the sporty car for the family car. I have had the Probe for 6 years now, and still really like it. So thanks for reinforcing our decision to part with the cash for the ST!

My daughter's first car was a '96 Probe GT (auto). She now has a '04 ZX3 with the 2.3 in it, and I have a '03 wagon, also with the 2.3 in it. I think you'll find the performance is fairly comparable between the Probe and the ST.
.
Seeing as how you're a Probe expert, would it supprise you to know the Probe's auto tranny went south at 103K? The dealer generously gave us $100 for it on trade-in ( Should have kept it for that little, but no room in the driveway.)

Just be careful stiffening up the ride. The little ones don't sleep well when they feel bump or their back get soar. My 99 Taurus put my daughter to sleep, but then I traded it for an 05 Sedan SE and it wasn't quite as good but worked. My 03 on the other hand... a bit stiffer.
