Non Car Enthusiast Friends

It hit me today that even some of my close friends really dont understand why I (we) love cars so much. For example...I was talking to a friend and he wanted me to drive to cleveland to ride the skatepark, a modest drive of about 2 hours or so. But i told him my car is going to be in the shop this weekend. He immediately told me the car has been nothing but trouble since i bought it and i should sell it. Now, ive had the car 2 years now and has been in the shop approx 8 times, 2 of which were for a horn that went out (and is out again ) and some other items and basic general maintenance. He then proceded to tell me my car is in the shop every 3 months because he did the math and thats how it came out . He obviously only views cars as basic transportation and seems to be one of those people who doesnt think they should ever break. I donno, i guess it rubbed me the wrong way cause he then proceded to argue about why its a waste for me to spend money on my car and how its dumb and all this and that. I have a few other friends that everytime my car breaks, they tell me to sell it and it will only hurt me in the long run. Granted, all my previous cars were horid money pits and extremely problematic and always broke. So maybe they saw how frustrated i was then and seem to think im that way now. Other than a camber problem and new alternator my car, even with the supercharger has been running fine for the last year nearly and 24K miles. I guess some people just dont get it and never will.

I love having most my friends as car enthusiasts, even if they don't know too much about them ( but i help to educate though i'm no pro by any means myself ). I've had to explain that DOHC is not always greater than SOHC, and that having an engine with DOHC's doesn't mean you've got variable valve timing such as v-tec, vvt-i, or whatever you wanna call it. Oh, and that tornado's do not work and there horrid money stealing contraptions, same with those ebay chips which are resistors...and do more harm than good.

You have to have motor oil in your blood to understand the obsession with the focus
or any other car for that matter.

What would they think of me, where the car hasn't run in almost a year, and I'm still making payments.

I drank motor oil when I was a kid.

and my brother acts the same way. He was appalled when I told him I was selling the SHO for 2000 bucks because he I knew I had a little more than that in it.

I have some like that. Try to talk cars with them but quickly give it up.

I'm more obsessed with the design and looks of a car, mainly cause I don't know too much about the mechanical side yet. But I'm learning as I go along I love to research cars and see what they're about. I don't really have anyone to talk cars with, family or friends. So I save it for here. They never get excited or care for that matter. For example I was reading about a new Mercedes Benz that has 738 lb/ft torque at 2000rpm. I told my brother and dad and they were like "Oh".
