Mazdaspeed 3

"Speed 3"

So a claimed "sub 6 second" 0-60mph time. Sounds great since there is no SVT Focus anytime soon and this is the chassis the new Focus ST uses in Euro. Sounds like this maybe the SVT Focus we all wanted badged as a Mazdaspeed 3. The mazda 3 is nicer than our foci. Now with power sounds great. Wonder how far sub 6 seconds? Maybe with some tuning and a few aftermarket parts. Sounds like a refined SRT-4 challenger.

Me likey!

I've disliked over powered sport-compacts just for the fact that in the old school, it was all about lightweight, handling machines...

Then they came out with this bad boy... I think I'm in love.

Small car enthusiasts are having their time in the spot light right now, with a $20k Civic SI, $21k VW GTI, $22k MS3, and a $24k WRX. This kind of thing seems to go in waves, we should be able to ride it for another couple years at the least, before it goes the way of the old Sentra SE-R and 1986 Corolla GTS.

EDIT: After that's done, lets have a RWD resurgence, m'kay?

I'm not usually a fan of turbos, but this seems to be an exceptionally well-developed car. Not to mention that NO company in the world has more people racing it's cars than Mazda, and they are very well tuned-in with these folks and learn a lot.

As long as they don't use the same setup in the Mazdaspeed Protege's i think it will be fine! They are running the 2.3 in the M3 but i hope they changed or at least modified the capabilities of the engine! The 2.0 from the Protege Speed's was a stock N/A engine with a turbo and slightly different compression ratio, so the moment you started modifying them they started spinning bearings, blowing rings, valve seals, and all that other fun stuff!

I disagree...I personally like the look of my focus over the Mazda 3's. But i will say that their appearance have been growing on me the more i see them on the road (still dislike them...but i won't say i hate them).

As for the SRT-4 challenger remark...stock for stock the mazda is already doing better then the SRT Hopefully this car will take down most of the srt4 owners cockiness down a few notches.

hehe. i pretty much have mine built, however i'm waiting til about march to order it so i won't have to drive it thru winter with the "Summer" tires on it. the closest dealer around here said they will have them in stock about early october and i plan on going for a test drive in one as soon as they do.

Focus MKII ST or MazdaSpeed3 Or Volvo C30?

Since we won't be getting the new European C1 MKII Focus ST any time soon we will have two alternative choices:

The MazdaSpeed3 has a version of the (Duratec) Mazda 2.3 intercooled and turbocharged for 263 h.p. and 280 lb. ft. of torque, six speed manual, 3100 lbs, 0 to 60 in the fives, 154.5 mph top speed, 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and an MSRP of about $25K.

The production version of the new Volvo C30 is due to be announced at the Paris Auto Show the end of September, 2006, ~218 h.p., ~236 lb. ft. of torque from a turbocharged and intercooled Duratec (Volvo) 2.5 litre five cylinder. This car has classic styling cues from the early 1970s Volvo P1800 wagon. The entry price point is said to be $24K.

I don't like the front grille of the Mazda much, and it's shape has been on the road for 2 years now, but it is a bargain for the price. The dealers may mark them up. I withhold my final judgement until Car & Driver magazine fully road tests one.

The Volvo C30 looks new by comparison, has less power, but still has the C1 based chassis. More details will be available at Paris. And I withhold my final judgement until Car & Driver magazine fully road tests one.
