This has to be too good to be true...

So I recently got a speeding ticket (first one in three years), and since my last insurance company dropped me becuase of my highly-paced past, I REALLY don't need another ticket on my record. So I went to the Alabama DMV website, which had a link to www.drivinguniversity.com, where apparently I can take an online traffic course for about $30 (each state varies), which upon completion they mail me a certificate I can bring to court that (hopefully) will allow me to get that ticket removed. I've never taken a traffic school course before, and since I haven't had a ticket in so long, this might just work. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Yes, I have unfortunately...traffic school is one of the options you can take it's not just $30 though...it's $30 to take the course and then you still have to pay for the ticket although it's a slightly discounted price. Then there are no points awarded and the ticket is pretty much dismissed. I didn't even have to go to court just send in that your doing traffic school and then send in the certificate of completion. Another good thing to look into is one of those ticket lawyers for like $80 they can get a ticket dismissed and you might just have to pay court costs...last I heard if it's more than 20 over though they won't take it, because the court will find you guilty and it's best just to do the traffic school.

I was doing 77 in a 50, but the cop lowered it to 70 in a 50, so I suppose I'm good on that. What was I thinking? I'm too poor to be speeding! lol

When i got my 96 in a 55 (this was in a mustang) ticket I paid a lawyer $70 to fight it for me cuz i went off to school and couldnt make the 1st court date. They faught it all the way through and I didnt have to pay another cent! Just to let you know though, this was on my 2nd ticket ever and the 1st one was about a year and a half before this one....The lawyers would be my vote, but seeing as you have had many tickets this might not be a good idea......Take the course, and drive the speedlimit!

If it wasn't for this most recent ticket, by March of 2007 my record would be squeaky clean. Like I said, IT'S BEEN AWHILE since I've been ticketed.

We have that program in TN, but usually you sign up when you're in court. The judge tells you that by paying for the ticket, and taking this course: the ticket will not go on your record. It worked very well for me over the years, but you can only do it once per year- in TN.

If you can do it, do it. I'm just surprised that it was not mentioned while you were in court.

Traffic school almost always works out nicely (with some exceptions). In Florida, they came in handy keeping my record clear, though I had a bad patch in 2003 with 3 tickets in a 90 day period (lots of fun there). This created something of a problem with a license suspension. (had to take a 12 hour class to get my license back for this). Unfortunately, in Florida (where I was living at the time) the points stayed (10 years before they would go off of my record). On the upside, my career led me to move to Pennsylvania which worked out especially nicely. See, not all states have reciprocity with your driving record. Pennsylvania only recognizes that I had a valid Florida license, and my driving record is now completely clean without so much as a violation or anything on my MVR now.

i have taken defensive driving 2 times, it cost me about 40 bucks and i never had to pay the tickets. i guess its different everywhere. once i volunteered to do dd, the other the judge made it my sentence. it costs anywheref from 30-60 dollars depending on where you live, they probably have diff rules, and if you havent already taken it, give a copy of the certificate to your insurance company, (just tell them you did it to lower your rates) and htey will lower your rates, not much probably 5-15%
