How is the wagon's trunk latch *supposed* to work?

Hello, I have a new PZEV wagon, and I'm not sure whether the trunk ( hatch, whatever you call it) is working correctly. Basically:

1. the remote unlocks the hatch, but the hatch remains connected to the car. It doesn't "pop free" from the car. (I then still have to find the release button with my finger and release it fully and pull up on the hatch to open it completely.)

2. I'm never sure if I've slammed it shut hard enough. I'm a pretty strong guy, and I've been surprised sometimes when I get back in the car after slamming the hatch closed and the "door ajar" indicator is still on. I can certainly make it close securely, but I have to be very careful and double-check that I did it hard enough.

Are these part of the design? Or might I have a malfunctioning hatch release/lock?

Thanks!

Mine has to be slammed pretty hard to close all the time, so that part seems to be normal, my remote hass an unlock for the car and then a button that opens the trunk seperately, but yes, you still have to pull it up, it doesn't come up on its own.

my mom's got an 01 wagon (so i dont know what differneces there are between your year, and hers. but my mom's wagon... sometimes you have to shut it pretty good to get it to latch. and the trunk releases with the button on the remote, we just have to pull up the door.

(so basically, i am just saying the exact same thing as viney, lol. consider this a second opinion.)

thanks guys!

thanks for letting me know. It's funny how much more acceptable an inconvenience like a poorly-closing trunk seems, once you find out it's "normal".

Why is that? :-)

I'm not usre if this will help or not. Ive got a zx3 and eariler tonight I went out for an errand my door ajar light was on. I stopped and poped the trun and closed it hard and it bounced and didn't catch. If i closed it clowly it would latch but not if I slammed it. Finally while I had the hatch open I manually closed the latch with my finger then hit the trunk release button on my dash. that seemed to work for me and I hope it possibly helps you guys.

The trunk is fine. When you use your remote, you just unlock it. If it was to open automatically it might have hit something. So you need to use your hand (just a small pull). The hidden button has very little use, maybe when you're camping and keep the car unlocked all the time... On a daily basis you use only the in-dash button and the remote.
