A ZX3 newb intro

I just purchased a 2001 ZX3 this week because my Ford Probe GT-t had an engine fire and melted wiring. So I needed something to drive in the meantime while I replace the electrical.

Its black with grey cloth. It has power windows and locks, but no keyless entry. It has 76k miles and came with 17" aluminum wheels. Overall its in pretty good condition. I paid 4850 for it and it only need 2 new tires. In driving it this week I found a couple of issues that I guess are normal from reading other posts. Less then 1/4 tank I started getting a hesitation and about the time my fuel light came on, it stalled on me. After filling the tank it was fine. I need to call Ford and check on getting the fuel pump replaced under the recall. Also the trunk release works when it feels like it. Also I was disappointed as many by the low mpg. I was expecting upper 20's at least, maybe 30's.

All in all I am happy though. I have always liked the ZX3. I have owned 4 Ford Probe GT's: '94,'93,'93,'94 Respectively. My current probe has a J-spec engine swap with turbo installed, Megasquirt n spark and all the fixins to go with it. Its my baby, but it was also a daily driver and too many times i have missed work to fix it, and this was the last straw. So now I have a car for daily driving and I can park my toy to fix it and may keep from breaking my body kit. I look forward to being a part of this forum as I have at Probetalk.com for 5 years.

C-ya's

I have always like the probe. How much different are the stock non turbo (I asume you put a turbo on it right?) J-spec engines Hp and TQ I know the U.S. Probe had what 170hp or in the 160's right? Do you have any pics of the probe I'm real intersted in seeing it.

The stock 2.5L v6 in the GT is 164hp/160tq. The Jspec KFZE engine i put is rated 170hp/150tq. I lost tq because of the lower displacement which is 2.0Lv6. It wasnt the best swap but it was the cheapest. I swapped because I blew a head gasket and needed an engine ASAP. I am rebuilding the 2.5L to reinstall with the turbo. Turbo on these cars is awesome, but I guess thats the case with most N/A cars that go FI.

My Cardomain site is http://www.cardomain.com/ride/793831 Theres pics on there you can check out.

I dont know if I am gonna mod it because its a daily driver and I need it as dependable as possible. However I may do bolt on such as CAI, headers and exhaust, only because those things will actually contribute to the fuel mileage. But the sound is of concern because I dont want a loud exhaust and I know that headers and exh are gonna make it loud. the question is HOW LOUD. So maybe you can give some insight on that.

Also I am debating whether or not to install a K&N in my stock intake or just go with a CAI. Whats the recommended way? The K&N costs me 38 bucks, but what will benefit my fuel economy. I am not really looking at performance increases.

No by Jspec i mean a japanese engine. The US engines are KL03 for the V6 and the Japanese are KLZE or KFZE. The KLZE is the 2.5v6 j-spec with 200hp 10/1 cr vs the US 170hp 9.2/1 cr. My KFZE is a 2.0Lv6 with 170hp 10/1CR vs the US 1.8Lv6 with 140hp. My swap gave me more HP topend but less tq down low. But with the turbo headers and T40E turbo, the downlow tq is greatly increased. It screams. Right now I am only running 6psi and ran a 1/4 best of 14.6.

There are some sound click threads for exhaust floating around here somewhere. I'd definitely check them out if you're worried about how loud the exhaust would be. IMO, the focussport stealth exhaust is a quality piece but a little pricey. I was behind scironzts when he had it on his focus and it wasn't loud at all.
