Think I got a good one...

After trading in our 2003 Focus ZTW (Zetec 2.0), we finally got the 2007 ZXW SES (Duratec 2.0) wagon last week. Both cars came with an automatic transmission and the same options. I keep the tires aired up at factory specs.

The 2003 ZTW was also bought new and over a period of 3 years/23,320 miles, I got anywhere from 19 city/28 highway miles per gallon of gas. I did get 30 mpg one time on a 180 mile trip on the interstate, without the air on. Otherwise, I averaged 19-21 mpg city and 26-28 mpg highway over a 3 year period. My wife of 38 years loves air conditioning, so it was always on in anything over 80 degrees outside. One other thing is I always got gas at a station close by that only has gas with a 10% Ethenol/Gasohol mixture in all grades. I always used regular grade.

Now to today...I filled up my very first tank full of gas. I couldn't wait for it to get close to empty, so I filled it at a Kwik Star at just under a quarter tank by the gauge. It took 9.97 gallons of gas and I stopped at the first shut off of pump #13. Now I can go to the same pump and stop it at the first shut off again with the next fill up and get a more accurate reading for the mileage. The gauge reads over full, but the other car was like that too.

Now I don't know what kind of gas was in the tank when we bought it, but it was full when we came to pick the car up. I filled up at 251.5 miles of driving on this first tank. That works out to about 25.22 mpg...that's great to me. Mostly city driving with (yup) the air on.

From reading the Focus Fanatics forum posts the past couple of weeks, I am going to use strictly 87 octane without the 10% Ethonol/Gasohol mixture and see what happens with the next fill up. No trips planned yet, but an excuse to make one is surely bound to come to me soon.

By the way, this Duratec motor is quite a bit smoother with more get up and go than the Zetec we had before. I wish I had gotten a '04 Focus ZTW with this motor as it would have been the perfect car for us. This car is nice, but it's not the car the '03 was. Way too lengthy to get into, but the build quality isn't as good as the '03 and the interior is cheaper and missing some things we really liked before.

All in all, I think we got a good one...and haven't even hit 500 miles yet. I'll just have to wait and see, but if the mileage doesn't get any better than this...I'm happy.

Let's see..."Honey, it says here that we should run the car at 70 mph for at least 2 straight hours to help break it in correctly...seat the bearings, swell the seals, smooth out the transmission, break in the tires, cure the clearcoat, etc..."

That AC must really kill your milage, I get 28-29 and 32 MPG out of my 2003 ZTW ( also mine is a 5- speed ).

Glad you like the new car, thats a statement, buying the same car again!!!

Yeah, the air definately lowers the mileage...but the 2003 never did get the mileage that even the EPA sticker said (25 city/30 highway).

Now with this 2007 Focus, at least it's in the ballpark at over 25 mpg (27 city/34 highway) with the first tank full. Need a trip on the interstate to check out the mileage there.

In a month or so, there'll be no need for the air finally...then I'm very curious to see what the mileage will be.
