Radar Detectors worth it?

friends of mine have suggested I look into a radar detector. I don't think I drive that fast but whatever. I've never had any experience with radar detectors and I've seen them on friend's cars. Do they work? Is it worth the money to buy and install one? What do you guys think?

depends..... I mean if you are into street racing and worry about cops a radar detector can come in handy...... that way if you are racing or something like it you'll get the warning when there are cops ahead or near u and u can slow down and not get into any trouble. Some of my friends have one and they say it helps out from time to time.

They don't do jack against lidar. By the time the detector picks up laser, you're done for.

IMHO it's better not to have one, and just make sure you don't go too much over the speed limit. Once the cop sees your detector, forget getting a warning or him cutting you a break. They may also be illegal depending on the state.

I never speed down residential streets (safer anyways.. who wants to kill some little kid that runs out in front of your car?), and I go about 5 - 10 mph over the speed limit... more if the flow of traffic is going faster. I rarely get pulled over. The one time i was pulled over in the past four or five years was for going 30 in a 25 in a residential area.

As for street racing, save it for the track.

With dectectors, you pay for what you get. I looked into them extensively before deciding they are not worth it. If you are to get one, look into the Valentine1. Its expensive, but probably the best on the market. It picks up radar all around the car and has one of the best ranges of all. Not only that, but it shows you with an arrow where the source is coming from. But as most of what I have read, that if a cop pulls you over and sees a radar dectector, he will most likely ticket you. Simply because the radar dectector is a sign that not only are you trying to evade the law, but that you must be doing something wrong in the first place to need one. But as far as usefulness, they are growing old. More and more departments are beginning to switch to laser detectors. Which not many conventional means will detect. Another problem is that with radar detectors, the newer ones will simply pulse, so unless there is another car infront of you that gets tagged, you wont know until he tags you. Just my .02

The problem is with the new pulse radar and lidar (laser), you don't KNOW the fuzz is around until they tag you.

they use very narrow beams, and aren't on all the time. Your radar/laser detector will only pop on to tell you that you just been busted.

And those laser jammer things they sell are worthless too.

OK, let me help settle this.....

Radar detectors are worth it if you spend the right ammount of money and get a V1 or an Escort. Expect to pay about 300-400 $ for these detectors.

I own a V1. I will say that it has most likely paid for itself and saved me about $500 bucks. In the past 6 months that I have owned one.

How ever with any radar detector there are some limitations.

1. Instant on. This is when a cop flips the switch of his radar gun and tags the car and then shuts his gun off. This gives you little to no warning that a cop is infront of you. Now there is a solution to this problem and you call them a lead or rabbit. They are traffic infront of you that will help you trip the radar trap and your detector will pickit up and give you some time to slow down.

2. Laser, now since laser is a beam of light its nearly impossible to catch reflections of it and have it hit your radar detector. I have yet to experiance in PA or NJ police to use this type of speed enforcement tool. How ever your best bet againts lasers is a Laser Jammer which is legal.

So my word of advice is that if you get a detector buy one that is proven to get the job done. It will cost a good ammount of change but you get what you pay for. Don't expect to be invincable and drive like a total maniac. The detector is a driving tool for your car, it does not give you stealth technology like the B-2 bomber has.

I agree 100% with Frizzle86. I have a Valentine One and it has saved me several times over the years. A radar detector is certainly not a free pass to speed; however, it does improve the odds significantly.

Yes, the police can still get you with instant-on radar and Lidar; however, if you use a radar detector, you will find that a good percentage of the cops are lazy and leave their radar running all the time, rather than "shoot" individual cars.

And I would agree that if one is going to go to the trouble of using a radar detector, get the best, the Valentine One. If it avoids a single speeding ticket it will pay for itself in the fine, court costs, and insurance premium increases that a single ticket gets you, particularl if you are in that 16-26 age group that insurance companies hate.
