Euro vs US models

as a brit im unfamiliar with many of the american performance focus models what is the SVT. now i know wh svt are but what spec is the car??

see we have the ST170 which is a 2.0ltr zetec engine an predicably 170ps or 164bhp i think it works out at. then there WAS the RS which was a limited edition of 4501 and a 220bhp 2ltr duratec turbo.

We now have the new ST which is 225bhp and is a 2.5 duratec turbod engine, similar engine to the old T5 volvos if you had those?

So can yu help me understand an outline your specials???

cheeRS

There is only one, the SVT Focus, which was sold from model years 2002-2004, and as mentioned, it's the same car as the ST170 with minor cosmetic differences and less equipment. Ford always screws the North American market out of the really good models (like the RS, or the various hi-po Escort offerings over the years).

There is a North American ST, but it is absolutely nothing like the current European ST.

The SVT Focus didn't sell for shit. What makes all these people think Ford should have brought the RS here, for 50 people on this board who say they would buy it. This is so annoying.

It bothers you that much?

We'll never know how well or how poorly the RS would have sold here, because Ford didn't even give North American customers the opportunity. So what if it had ended up being a sales failure? Would it really have cost the company that much if it failed? It's not like Ford wasn't already headed for the crapper anyway, regardless of what they did or didn't do for the Focus. They got dependent on the sales of trucks and SUVs to bring in the money and neglected to keep the cars fresh, and now that truck and SUV sales are down, they are surely losing far more money than they would have lost on selling the RS here in small numbers. It could have at least been a non-profitable image car to boost the image of the Focus among young buyers.

But... Ford has a factory in Hermosillo, Mexico where up until only recently they were turning out the Focus hatchback models for plenty cheap. They could have made the necessary changes to build a variant like the RS and sold the car for a price that the U.S. market would bear. After all, they didn't have to import the Focus itself over here to North America from Europe at a high cost - they just tooled up the factories here to build the car.

Like I said in my last post, yeah, they probably would have still lost money on each RS they sold, but at least it would have been something; the SVTF was at the top of it's game for about 1 year, before getting clobbered by an onslaught of much higher-powered and more sophisticated cars - cars which the RS would have stood a better chance against.

However, I can understand pspringe's point that there is no use crying about it - they never sold the car here and they never will, so get over it. At this point all we can hope for in the American market is that if the new model due for 2010 does materialize, it will be WAY better than what is sold here now.
