Ford has been taken out by Toyota this month...

Buh-bye Big Three (well... technically they went buh-bye when Daimler bought Chrysler... but hey...)

QFT. Maybe if they would stop reinventing the Mustang and start putting a little more FOCUS towards another car that can compete with Toyota's fuel effecient vehicles.

What I'm really surprised by is the fact that nobody has noticed this article (linked off of the one you linked) regarding the focus directly. http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...608020385/1148

Ford point blank said that the euro focus is NEVER coming to america, and that in 2010, there will be a whole new car. I guess if Ford wants the focus to be the bottom feeder that the Escort was for the last 10 years of it's production run, enjoy. You've already lost my interest in it. The same platform that's been around since 2000 with a fusion style front end and rear, No thanks. As it is, the 05/06 update was more of a downgrade from the 2000-2004 focus (all of the dashboard and interior features that I like and make use of are gone).

If anything, the article on the focus explains the article you originally linked. The focus is stale. It was a brilliant product a few years ago, but when the redesign for europe was done, the north american market version should have been in the consideration not an afterthought. Great planning Ford Motor Company! A Bold Move if ever there was one to keep a product out there well past it's sell by date.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. It's not Toyota or Honda's fault that Ford, Chrylser, and GM's products have a less than stellar reputation for quality. It's not even their fault that neither Ford, Chrysler, nor GM felt the need to update their products in a timely manner such that there is a good reason to trade in your car after four years because the new model is a meaningful upgrade or change from the old one.

What does the owner of a 2002 Civic or Corolla have from those manufacturers that I, as the owner of a 2002 focus zx3 doesn't? A reason to move up to the new model. Hmmm, the difference between the 02 and 06 civic - the whole car ... the difference between my 02 zx3 and an 07 zx3 - the 07 has fewer standard features, costs more, has a different headlight/grille and dashboard that lost the utility of the 02's dashboard. Screw Ford. They deserve what they get for not investing in their product and thinking that we're dumb enough to think that a new grille and dashboard are reason enough to upgrade despite massive decontenting.

Yeah i read the focus article. Ford's genius plan for "freshening" the Focus - give it a fusion grill.

Here's Black&Tan's Ford turnaround plan.

Fire the execs and let Mazda take over.

Mazdaspeed 3. Mmmmm. goodness.

QFT.

Ford's losing the game. There's no one thing they, or GM or Chrysler have done wrong, even selling vehicles at a lower cost they are evaluated as being less vehicle. I can say that without needing to prove a thing, because my fellow citizens are doing the proving for me. I don't believe the Mustang will save FoMoCo NA, or the Fusion, or even the Euro Focus, there can't be a simple fix for the culmination of a trend that started better than 2 decades ago, when the Japanese started offering a better package. The momentum they have gathered is enormous at this point. The new Civic had a serious recall a while back, was it buried by bad press and labeled a new 90's Elantra? No, and this isnt the problem, its a symptom of the image Asian automakers have now in this market.

Before Mazda changed their direction and debuted the 3 and 6, they ceased all new production for something like 2 years, to great economic loss (this is from memory, exact figures are sketchy, somebody can correct me if they wish), and when they came back to the market the had basically shrugged everything that wasnt selling well (the miata and B-series truck, I think) and marketed a strong core effort. Ford's bandaid approach, lacking focus (har har) and strong definition, is not going to change their image, and I dont see it doing anything to divert the massive pressure they have on them now.

Toyota at number 2 a big deal? There's very little doubt in my mind they will be #1 sooner rather than later, and unless the market changes we may well see Hyundai/Honda creeping into #3.

I have sympathy for the workers themselves, but not for the company, or the plan, or honestly the products. If Ford were my employee, I'd fire his ass unless he started showing up to work on time, cause if he cant be bothered to care then neither can I.

Well, you guys are all good at making broad and sweeping predictions. Read the article before you react. Toyota sold more cars in July. Ford is still no. 2 in market share year-to-date. There have been many ups and downs for all car manufacturers. Toyota has had it's own share of outdated platforms and even plans on keeping the Corolla chassis around a bit longer.

Also, There are features on the '05 + Focus that weren't available before. The low end of the Focus lineup has lost some features but the upper end has also gained some.

GM and Ford are nowhere near bankruptcy. This is not the first time they've seen hard times either. They intentionally build up reserves in order to weather these times. It will be atleast 2010 before anything catastrophic becomes apparent.

If you read the second article in iantm's reply you would realize that they are planning on developing the MKIII Focus as a USA model first and then pushing it out to Europe, Mazda and Volvo. This will allow them to create a Focus that can meet the needs of all markets.
