A steering wheel to DIE for?

While bustling around town in my sporty compact, I've noticed alot of drivers have removed the airbag-equipped steering wheel in favor of the more stylish MOMO or Sparco aftermarket wheel. Is this REALLY a good idea? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't ALL safety systems in modern cars equipped with an airbag built around the the airbag? If you've ever seen a crash-test video, you can clearly see how the steering wheel is not reshapen by the dummy's head thanks to the airbag. I'd just like to get your opinions on this.

Triple posts and things like this happen very very often, usually the mods catch them before they are on the forum for long. The new forum software will correct this.

Back to the question..... yeah there are members that have done this but in doing so, with most state/local laws, it is ILLEGAL and thus makes the car not streel legal. It's illegal to remove a vehicles pre-installed safety measures.

Yeah, I don't think it is a smart thing to do unless it is a show car or for the track where you have a harness, helmet, etc. I just noticed on one of the new Scion Xb commericals that they show that as one of the customizations you can get. Since the market for these cars are supposed to be teens and young adults, the very people who are at much greater risk of getting into an accident. I think it is crazy.

I've seen the commerical you're talking about. When they show the non-approved Scion parts installed on the car, their is a fine print at the bottom of the screen that says something along the lines of "vehicle shown is not street-legal".

i totally agree with this!! i love the look of aftermarket streering wheels, but not nearly enough to sacrifice my safety and my sons safety. Unless I had a car totally done up as a show car, i see absolutely no justifiable reason to remove your stock steering wheel/air bag....just idiotic.

Next time I see the commercial I'll look for it, but with all the eye catching graphics and color going on I don't see too many people paying attention to the probably small white print at the bottom.
