hey guys! (nooob)

. Im a long time lurker, first time poster. Im looking to get rid of my 02 diesel truck to get a focus. Im getting closer to make a decision, i'll probably be looking to purchase in a month or so. I wanted to get some info from some owners though. What years would be the best to get, obviously newer ones will have lower mileage and more of a warranty. Im actually considering a brand new 05, just so i know its been treated right. However, the SVT model appeals to me. My question is what's the difference (engine wise) between the ZX3 2.0 and the svt 2.0?

This car will be my daily driver and I plan on modifying it for auto-X racing occasionally.

first off i'd like to say to Focus Fanatics!

you won't find a better community to be a part of or more information for your new (hopefully) purchase.

as far as which way to go, i would have to say any 06 ST would be your best bet. the ST models are the ones that come with the 2.3 liter engine. the other models are still duratec, but are only 2.0. the zetec's are good performers, there are more mods for them, but the duratec market is quickly expanding, and the duratecs come stock with more power.

as far as an svt, yes, it has more power than either of the other engines, but i hear a lot of people on here complaining about mechanical problems that seem to arise after 30k. however, i have driven an svt once or twice, and they are impressive.

ultimately, the choice is yours, but do some research before you make a decision. and one last thing, whichever way you go, i'm sure you won't be disappointed! once again, welcome!

Do you mean the current 2005+ 2.0L Duratec engine?, both engines are 2.0L, the main difference being components, layout, and power output. SVT Zetecs are beefed up internally, and push about 170 hp/145 ft-lb torque. SVT Zetecs also rev a little higher. SVT's also have a much better suspension and braking system, along with an exclusive to the SVT model 6spd manual Getrag transmission.

I would suggest you test drive a 2004 SVT, if you can find one for sale, and also try a 2005/6 ST sedan. The ST is the new model version of the SVT, just slightly less balls-to-the-wall. The ST has the SVT suspension (slightly detuned), similar 4 wheel disc setup, 5spd manual, 2.3L Duratec (pushing 151hp/154 ft-lb torque), some trick interior bits. (I own an ST, so I may be a bit biased, lol)

good luck bro, welcome to the focus world. I think you'd be most happy with either the SVT or the ST.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Im 99% positive im going with a focus, the only other thing im seriously consitering is the Golf TDI. But its illegal to buy new in california... (there's loop holes though).

That makes me feel somewhat better about the SVT, probably because they're so damn hard to find and i would feel like im 'settleing' for a non SVT hatchback.

About the newer 2.3's, can you get those in the hatchback? that would be nice!

SVT all the way... trust me.. you'll get bored with a regular focus.. not that they are bad or anything.. I have owned both and just like the SVT better...

yeah, you can get them in hatchback. however, if you shoot for an 05 model, the only one that will come with a 2.3 is the sedan. that's why i suggested an 06

...ok this is going to sound retarded.. so bare with me.

I went on ford's website and I couldnt find an "ST" model. So I googled it and it looks like a europian model. Looks bad ass IMO! but i havent seen anything like that on the streets here in california. Are they special order or something?

those indeed are the european foci. you won't find them at ANY dealership in north america, but you might be able to special order one from europe. if you wanted to pay all the taxes, duties, import costs, and whatever else would be required to bring one across the pond, that is.
