Now a real combustion engine improvement

MIT just released Ethanol Boosting System (EBS)

This engine simple uses direct injection to momentrily increase octane rating of the gas/air mixture in a turbocarged gasoline engine, alowing much higher levels of pressurizing, and hence higher efficiency.

They say this would increase the octane rating of regular unleaded to about 130 and would allow a 1.5l 4banger to match 3.0l V6 power - so I guess about 200hp 200ft/lb - with much less gas.

yes, but this it talking about smaller displacement, and higher efficiency and MUCH MUCH higher boost... the ting is.. the only thing (other than engine construction) that limits the amoount of "boost" one can run is the fear of "precombustion or Knock... which happens when the gas explodes prematurely before the valves are closed.. that is why you need higher octane in regular torbos..

Now if you can use a regular undleaded and increase the octane by direct injection and the resultingrating is around 130 (BTW BP has a 120rating fuel .. it costs $16 a gallon) you can run very very high lavels of bosst and thus get much moe power ....

The Audi/GTI/GLI 2.0 Turbo would probably run some 250 + Hp..

the 3.0l V6 comparison used 1.5l 4banger... a much smaller engine

So I guess is the key here. Igor is assuming the power numbers. If you follow the link, the don't make any numeric claims.
