Ford Svt Lives!

Ford's Fields: SVT lives

NEW YORK -- Ford Motor Co.'s Special Vehicle Team will survive, Ford executive Mark Fields says. But the performance brand has been scaled back.

Going forward, Ford will offer one high-performance Mustang and one high-performance truck in its lineup, Fields said last week here at the New York auto show.

Ford expects to sell 5,000 to 10,000 units of each SVT vehicle annually, he said.

Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, wouldn't say what kind of truck is in the works or when it would debut. The Shelby GT500, the latest Mustang developed by SVT, is scheduled to go on sale this summer.

A two-vehicle stable is a departure from a year ago, when Ford said SVT eventually would have as many as five products, more than ever before. One of those was to have been the Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin in 2007. It later was canceled as part of the automaker's Way Forward restructuring plan.

That cancellation, plus other changes for SVT, had triggered apprehension over the performance brand's future. Fields tried to put those fears to rest.

"SVT isn't dying," he said. "Would I like to do more? Sure. But at the same time, we've got to balance our resources."

Fields acknowledged that SVT and Ford Racing's marketing groups have been combined. He described Ford's performance strategy as a three-pronged approach encompassing SVT, Ford Racing and "personalized performance" aimed at the tuner crowd.

Although SVT has been scaled back, Fields said he is "from the school that says performance vehicles make brands stronger."

"I believe they have a critical role in our Way Forward because they challenge our designers and engineers to excel, they excite our marketers, and they make a strong emotional connection to customers."

No new SVT Focus. Oh darn. I was wondering what they might do with the Duratec.

i suppose they are going to see how these two svt products will do. Maybe they are still thinking about making a fusion, which would be cool, especially if they either worked with the 2.3l or this new 3.5l V6 thats suppose to make 265 horsepower, but something tells me that if they did theyd make a 2.3l turbo and itll basically be at like MS6 specs. Of course the 3.5l V6 fusion is going to be pretty quick already.

I do not think SVYT focuys will be anytime soon.

I believe Ford is adopting the 2 tierred performance system from Europe:
ST for mildly modified performance daily drivers and RS (SVT) for more radical, limited run performance machines.

RS and SVT will be used only for the models selling the best and possibly bringing ernough halo effect for the rest of the lineup - so in europe it will be the Focus, in the US it will be Mustang and a Truck.

However this does not mean there will not be an SVTF level Focus in the near future.. after all the SVTF sold as ST Focus in Europe below the RS....

the ST versions will simply be less exclusive, not limited run etc.. and will allow space for an extreme version should the ST sell exceptionally well.

Still glad they scaled back. Liking SVTF in such limited #s. Although clones are showing up more & more, us smart enthusiasts can spot the fakes. I still can apreciate seeing tuned up foci as long as they are'nt tooooo riced out. Just wished the aftermarket ***s would reckonize how many foci are around and give us more support & stop flooding the market with redundent products.

Sure, it would be great to have a blown mustang or a 13 second truck but with gas prices as high as they are and still climbing, I couldn't afford the gas to run one... then tack on the payments and the insurance ,,, oh my .... don't get me wrong, I'm glad SVT will still be around, just thinking out loud. LOL
