Quote:
No wonder Ford President Mark Fields, who ran Mazda for five years starting in the late 1990s, and is now leading Ford's current turnaround strategy, calls Mazda "a model for what we have to do at Ford."
Quote:
Though he is enthusiastic by necessity about Ford's new designs, he admits that the Edge and the strikingly similar Lincoln MKX were developed at a time, when "marketing and design weren't even talking to each other." A similar problem existed at Mazda until Fields restructured it. The CX-7, says marketing and design consultant Dennis Keene, "does an excellent job of communicating speed and performance in a segment not known for it, and looks totally of a piece with the other new Mazdas."
Two important things to think about...

and two reason I have so much hope for Fields.. and why I view the delay of ALL of upcoming Ford releases with anticipation, rather than anxiety

well. .there is a bit of anxiety.. but the anticipation is greater.

The only question that remains is - can Fields make all the necessary changes happen in Ford's bureaucracy and Ford family control mentality. I sure hope so.

I say Yes..

Bill Ford finall got hold of the board and has the power to push for no string on Fields..Fields', and Stevens' only job is to bring Ford NA to sustanable profitability.

Bill Ford's job is to muscle out the space/freedom needed for that to happen.

We need to remind ourselves that Bill Ford is not your typical Car Manufaturer CEO... he is a visionary at first, devoted to save the company second, and only then he cares what is the status quo...

Buddhist, environmentalists tend to disagree with the old school Fat Cats usually in borard rooms.

Is Fields the guy that saved Mazda's bacon, then? It says he was with Mazda for 5 years starting in the late '90s. That was around the time they finally started making (or announced that they would be making) some interesting cars again. In the late '80s and early '90s Mazda almost ran themselves into the ground trying to outdo Toyota by having one or more of every model possible - hatches, sedans, wagons, sports car, SUVs, trucks, etc. and it failed badly because most of the product was bland and/or uncompetitive - they spread themselves too thin and lost focus on what it meant for a vehicle to be a Mazda.

So if this is the guy who pushed the resurgence of Mazda, I say more power to him with his efforts on Ford.
