SVT Future

I know this has been discussed a lot but this article is out of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It kinda raises hopes that Ford still has ideas for performance cars.

Ford opens up its high-performance brand to all dealers.

Beginning with this summers introduction of 2007 Shelby GT500, the Ford brand will let all its dealers sell SVT vehicles, but there are major concerns about the future of the division.

The change could help Ford sell more high-performance cars and trucks. But some SVT dealers are crying foul.

Meanwhile, after a 2 year product drought for the SVT brand, its future is up in the air, sources say. Its not clear what, if any, products are slated beyond the GT500, and Ford has declined to talk about its plans.

Ford says its not backing away from performance products. Some sources say Ford is folding the SVT marketing team into the regular Ford team. Some also expect SVT's engineers to be diluted or more closely tied to Fords racing efforts.

That would be a remarkable about face for SVT vehicles, which went on sale in 1992. Just a year ago, Fords product Cheif, Phil Martens, said SVT was bigger and better funded than ever before. Martens, who has since left Ford, said SVT woud have up to 5 products.

One of the 5 new products was to be the Sport Trac Adrenalin in 2007. But Ford canceled the Adrenalin as part of its Way forward turnaround program. Ford had already dropped plans for a next generation Lightning.

SVT products typically sell for higher profit and less volume. For instance, an average of 7,260 units per model year of SVT mustang. Ford has sold 144,994 SVT vehicles since 1992.

Ford Spokeswoman Whitney Drake said "the SVT organization is working on several future projects that we werent ready to talk about just yet" She wouldnt say whether or not the SVT name will be carried on past the GT500.

Yeah right now most of future Ford products are unknown.. not just SVT.. so not know ing about SVT products does not mean much.

It is likely SVT will remain workign as part of Ford Racing - as stated in the article... ans it is likely the SVT name will not be as pronounced as it used to be... it is likely the regular performance model will be called ST... and right now the Fusion is the most likely candidate for the performance treatment probably for 2008 model year.

the SVT team is not gone.. but 1) it will not be working independently of FR and 2) we need to accept that Ford NA does not have prodcts worthy of SVT treatment. - SVT and FR have been working models for other Ford markets.. such as the C1 Focus ST etc.
