Salvage Title

I saw a SVT for sale last week for $7,000 with a salvage title, the seller stated that the bumper & driver side headlight was the only damage & was fixed by a professional body shop. I am consistently seeing used car ads stating that they have a salvage title, but it was only minor damage to a bumper or fender, unless I am mistaken, if itís car thatís 2 or 3 years old, an insurance co. will only consider it totaled and report it to DMV declaring it a salvaged vehicle if the cost to fix the damage exceeds the worth of the vehicle.
Anyone out there have any info on this?

While every state has different regulations regarding salvage titles (some allow such vehicles to be repaired and inspected and then will issue a "rebuilt" title), I'd personally be very leery of the vehicle. I see ads like you referred too - descriptions of what really is minor damage, but then they state it's a salvage title. Most insurance companies use a "threshold" of damage ratio, before they'll consider a car a total loss. I believe some can reach as high as 75% of the car's value, before they'll write it off. Another concern is warranty issues (if the vehicle is still within manufacturers warranty).

Like the old saying goes, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"... I'm thinking that probably applies to many of the cars advertised like this.

get the carfax reports or umm i cant remember the other campany that does them it should give you a better idea of what happened...
in most states from what i have heard there has to be enough ddamage to total the car for a salvage title to be placed on it...
if everythign is done correctly most states will also allow you to apply for a new title on it after state DOT inspections...
*shrug* and i agree if it sounds to good to b e true it usually is... ther ecould be uniody damage hes not telling you about because it cant be seen.

Sadly a carfax report is only good IF the damage was reported to the insurance company. If someone paid to have it repaired without turning it into their insurance, there'd be no record. I've seen that happen too many times being in the business.

Salvage Title

I try to ask the seller for the VIN # & reciepts from the body shop, but the car was sold soon after it was listed.

Something else to think about, if you should run across another one. Should you ever want to trade it in for a new car, most dealers will not touch a"S" title.

My big point is the same point I have with any unibody car that's in an accident- no matter how minor. If the crumple zones are compromised, then the next time there's a hit there it's that much easier to fold up. I've bought plenty of salvage cars in my lifetime, but only used those bodies for racing. The only right way to repair damaged crumple zones is to weld in new subframes- however that's both expensive, and it would depend on the welder as to how good the repair is in an accident.

There must've been some report somewhere as to the extent of the original damage on the history of the car. Body shops love finding cars that haven't been reported wrecked so they can pretty them up and sell them for a profit.

It would be really nice if someone who has experiece with wrecked cars (more than mine) can do a write up and tell the rest of us what things to look for that indicate body damage in different areas of the car.
