almost killed my svt

so i was driving home from work...just got out of 1 hour of bumper to bumper traffic so i am hauling *** . all of of a sudden the guy in front of me in the fast lane slows to 30 because he has to answer his cellphone(speed limit is 60)....so i jump on side him and in a stupid gesture to show my dislike for his driving i downshift from 5th to 4th gear...only i accidentally put that b**** in 2nd....now i am doing almost 70 miles an hour so i hit the steering wheel, the lights on gauge cluster light up like 4th of july...and my car starts sputtering and wont go any faster.so i get off the expressway and pull over.....after a few seconds she calms down and now she runs like a champ again.now what has been making me curious is why this happened (other than me not controlling my emotions) ...was it a safety installed by ford to possibly allow the ecu to reset itself after such an incident...or did i partially flood the engine because the injectors pumped fuel at the same time i hit the limiter...hmmm....anyone have any guesses........please keep flaming to a min. i have been driving stick for 10 yrs and i had a heavily boosted eclipse(this mistake would have blown the intake man. off my dsm) thanx guys.......

..hmm, I did the same once messing around with a co-working on the way into work, not thinking, it bounced off the limited maybe 3 times before I figured out I can't actually go that fast in 2nd. I think though I was right at, like, effectivly 7600 in the gear, so it wasn't severe, damage done primarilly to ego.

I'm not actually sure if the limiter cuts spark of fuel, tho I suppose if it were fuel you could get a super-lean mixture to ignite, and we dont melt pistons every time we hit the limiter. I'd guess the engine was drowning in fuel, but I'm sure somebody smarter will chime in.

if you shift into the wrong gear the correct response is to depress the clutch immediately and find the right gear, not to hit the steering wheel

I did this in my first week of driving my ST. Downshifted from 5th to 2nd, instead of 5th to 4th, hit the limiter, car shuts down, coasts to a halt on the shoulder, then restarts after about 5 mins of alternate praying and swearing.
