2007 Volkswagen Eos **HOTNESS**

Remember that cool new Focus convertible that the Europeans are getting, but not us of course?

Well, we ARE getting something very similar from Volkswagen later this year - the 2007 Volkswagen Eos. This thing looks HOT! Only problem I see is the projected $30,000 pricetag, but that's only an estimate at this time. Let's hope Volkswagen can bring it to us for less than that.

Eos Rises: The goddess of the sunrise set to enter U.S. market sporting a convertible hardtop

2007 VOLKSWAGEN EOS
ON SALE: November
BASE PRICE: $30,000 (est.)
POWERTRAIN: 2.0-liter, 200-hp, 207-lb-ft turbocharged I4; fwd, six-speed manual
CURB WEIGHT: 3232 lbs (est.)
0 to 60 mph: n/a

The new Volkswagen Eos seats four in a tightly efficient body and has a convertible hardtop that stows itself securely in the trunk in about 25 seconds. Is that enough to make the car a success?

Maybe in Europe, where even secretaries drive SLKs. And maybe here, too, since the Eos does what no other entry in its class can. True, there are plenty of four-seat convertibles here, from the Audi A4 to the Volvo C70—a good 10 in all. And there are hardtop convertibles, too, though only the Volvo seats four. So what does the Eos have that the C70 doesn’t? The VW’s five-piece convertible hardtop sports a fully opening sunroof.

Will America care? In the past it has. The Eos should appeal to the same audience that bought tens of thousands of the old VW Cabrios, a model discontinued about four years ago. This new car is far stiffer and doesn’t require that big basket-handle roll hoop to both hold it together and protect passengers in the event of a rollover (there are pop-up roll hoops behind the rear seats in Eos).

The Volkswagen Eos offers something rare in a hardtop convertible, a sunroof. Power comes from a pair of engines borrowed, like many other parts for the car, from the Passat and Golf. Both engines are from the worldwide mix of Golf and Passat powertrains—the 2.0-liter, 200-hp FSI turbo and 3.2-liter, 250-hp V6. Because the engines fit in a Golf, the front of the car is also Golf-derived. The suspension links are from the Passat. So what you get is a sort of wide-track Golf sans roof, though the line between Passat, Golf and Eos is further blurred once you start looking under the car.

The interior looks just like one of their utility vans...

I'm not feeling it.

The seats look to have the same shape as the GTI. As well as being the same motor as the GTI. I would expect 30k to be about right to have auto hardtop convertible with a sunroof, and the wider stance from the Passat. If they do bring the price down slightly it will be by 3 or 4 k at the most. They already have a cheaper 4 seater convertible, the Beetle. Which of coarse may go away since they seem to not keep more than one convertible on the lot at a time. And the fact there is an A4 convertible really helps with the transition to a new convertible that isn't the Beetle.

It would be good if they renamed it Cabrio before it launched in the US, that would really increase sales.

The Dub scene is strong with this one! I have not heard any rumors of them discontinuing the Beetle convertible. The Cabrio nameplate got sort of a bad name after the last batch of them proved to be pretty problematic. I think the Eos will be a nice change for VW and should bring in some new customers that normally wouldn't look at them. VW sales across the board have been better in the last year, so this should only help.

HAHA.. OK how is this different from the Focus Convertible...

30k for a slow turd - because of the hard top....

The focus looks maybe a little better.. but overal it is the same car.. 4 seater compact with a hardtop.. FWD 4banger 30k sticker...

there goes the answer, why Ford is wise to keep the Focus CC 9or whatever it is called) overseas.
