1989 Sho

Ok, I got in a accident with my beater, and I am hopin they total it, because I found a 1989 Taurus SHO for $550. Not sure the mileage, but I have always wanted one of these. I don't know a whole lot about them, or what to look for so I know it is worth the money.. I know that some of them have engine trouble alot, not sure which years, and they have a Yamaha motor in them. Other than that I don't know a whole lot. Thanks.. Any information is appreciated. thanks.

I think all SHOs had a yamaha motor, but I believe 89 was the fastest year for some reason. Just make sure you get a stick because the autos were trouble, because they were weakly built. The autos had a 3.2 liter and the manuals were 3.0 liter. Two of my friends have 94 shos, 1 auto, 1 manual. The auto, overdrive broke(some switch in the shifter), and right now, it was involved in an accident so they are totally rebuilding it, but all the gears were missing teeth and stuff. The sho block is a great block though. Terrible accessories - The block itself can easily withstand 10000 rpms. Not much help, but this is the little I know about Shos.

All SHOs had the Yamaha V6, until Ford cheaped out and put in a V8 and made it crappy. Awesome cars till they did that.

The only thing to worry about is that Ford dealers won't service them. Don't know how to work on that engine. Make sure you have someone around you who knows how, especially since at $550 you should expect to do some repairs real soon.

89 was the first year Ford came out with the SHO, it was only available in a manual transmission. The car was plauged with problems, the suspension for one sucked !! The 2nd generation SHO's were better looking, the 89-91 SHO's were a tad on the boxy side.I will also add that if you find one thats not all rotted out consider yourself lucky.

i owned a 89 SHO and the car was a blast my fam was the orginal owner and we had it for 10 years. we only had one engine problem and that was with the computer happened after 5 years of owning it. the clutch went after 85000 miles. we had no other major problems with it. the clutch on the SHO is quite heavy
