Noob with SVT questions

Great forum you got here, already learned quite a bit just from looking around a bit. I'm probably going to be purchasing an '03 SVT ZX3 tomorrow, managed to get the dealership down to $11600, which doesn't seem like a bad deal considering its only got 36K on it, leather, 6-CD in the dash, bun warmers, and the works. Nice ride all in all. But I do have a few basic questions that may seem rather...shall we say noobish? So please forgive me if I sound like I'm new at this, because seeing as I am coming from an old school 280Z, I am.

1). Regular or Premium gas? I've heard both sides of the query and want to nail it this down.
2). What type of oil? Brand? 5W? 10W-30? I know everyone has their preferance and their own brand, and yes I realize that the owners manuel probably has a good suggestion too.
3). Those killer clear tail lights I see (like in below image I've attached), where is the best place to pick them up? What can I expect to pay? Are these Euro tail lights or APC or "Altezza Style", I've found multiple listings and multiple styles online but these are by far the nicest I've seen. Is it difficult to install them?
4). Same question on clear sidemarkers to replace the yellow front sidemarkers.
5). Any specific maintainance my new SVT will need that an older car may not have? Special coolant types, windshield wiper fluid, etc?

Thanks alot!

First off, Welcome

Im not an svt guy, i'm a duratecer, but i'll start where i can. 11600 doesnt seem to bad to me. prolly the most i'd give would be 11, but like i said i dont watch the pricing on the svts that often.

I believe those tail lights are the APC ones?? Alot of people on here actually dont get new euro lights, they do what is called nite shading, i think it makes the cars look alot better that with the euro's, but thats just my oppinion. do a search for nite shades, or tinted tail lights and look at some of the picture i think youll like it + its alot cheaper than new tails.
Also with the side markers, you can use the nite shades on them and black them out, otherwise you can get the clear side markers at a number of different places, such as e-bay ( but be ware of many ebay lights becuase they tend to be of lesser quality, there are many people who never have trouble with e-bay stuff, but there are just as many that have had touble ) or many of the focus performance parts sites. (i'm not exactly sure which of the parts sites sell them so i wont tell you, but again do a search for clear side markers or what have you and all of your questions will be answered.) the search tool is your new best friend.

Lastley, the world of car modding is a very personal thing. just as my oppinion is biased toward nite shaded lights, because i have them, other people on this site ( or any other for that matter ) will tell you the opposite and tell you to go with the euro's and clear markers. take all of the suggestions at face value, they are suggestions. do you own research and find out what YOU like not what WE like. and that goes for everything from lights, to hoods, to paint, to performance parts.

I hope an svt guy will come on here soon and fill in the blanks that i wasnt sure on.

Good luck and happy modding
-Jon-

are the seats leather with a cloth insert? or full black leather? if theyre full black leather, buy that one before anyone can even see it

even still, not a bad pride

1. premium gas, the 2 bucks per tank isnt worth getting crappy gas
2. 5-20, 10w30..either will be fine, all depends on where you live. prefill from the factory was 5w20
3. please dont get euro tails, tney look awful and ruin the lines on the car...just dont do it
4. ebay will be fine
5. check what tsbs or maitenence has been done. check what computer flash it has, as well as the clutch or suspension tsb

anyone else have anytthing to add?

The SVT requires a minimum 91 octane fuel, personally I don't want to find out what happens with regular. Check the tsb's, leave the tail lights alone, and I believe ford puts a synthetic blend 5W20 in there from the factory but I may be wrong, and anyone feel free to correct me if I am. I personally use a full synthetic 5w30 in mine. Other than that enjoy.

The compression of the engine and calibration of the engine requires that you run at least 91 octane.

first off now if you read the SVT supplement manual, it will suggest you use premium 5w30 oil. Motorcraft oil filters are suggested as well. and that is agreed by most members on this board. it suggests that you use Motorcraft Premium coolant as well. (the yellow stuff) go to the service desk and ask for them to run an OASIS report on that car!! this will tell you what dealerships have done to the car. it is the only way to find out wether or not TSB's have been done. so a search on here and you can find all the TSB's related to our SVT's. if you are thinking about your first performance mod; most people on here will suggest you go with a SCT XCal2 flash programmer from Wayne at Hypnotic Illusions and i agree with this. like others have said. leave the factory tailights alone, and if that pic is the one you want to buy. please find some stockers, those things really screw up the lines of the car. appearance mods IMO should first be getting the windows tinted, doing the Independant fog mod, and dong the DIY short antenna mod. these 3 will improve the overall flow and will prolly, basically be all the will be needed for the exterior. except of course front clear side markers. that is a common purchase as well.
im glad to hear that you are interested in SVT! if you end up bringin it home, good luck and dont **** it up. also, remember that is car is made for the corners and not straight lines. this car is superior in handling cause of its Rally car breeding. straight line racing isnt its strong suit. but get one of those bastard SRT-4's in the twisties, and you leave them like its nothing. again GOOD LUCK with your purchase!

Re: Noob with SVT questions

1). Regular or Premium gas? I've heard both sides of the query and want to nail it this down.
-SVTF's require nothing less then 91 octane.

2). What type of oil? Brand? 5W? 10W-30? I know everyone has their preferance and their own brand, and yes I realize that the owners manuel probably has a good suggestion too.
-I use 5w-30 in mine. That's what ford recommends (according to the oil cap), but since i work at ford i just use the motorcraft oil.

-Please leave the taillights alone. Those style lights are just plain fugly IMO. Go with some european style lights or black out the factory ones instead.

4). Same question on clear sidemarkers to replace the yellow front sidemarkers.
-U can check ebay for those.

5). Any specific maintainance my new SVT will need that an older car may not have? Special coolant types, windshield wiper fluid, etc?
-Check for TSB's and there are no special types of fluids used on the SVTF.

5W-30 is the proper oil to use. Don't use anything heavier.

I would sugest using Royal Purple Fluids in your car. For everything.
