GM's Design Direction

Saab is so screwed...

GM's head of global design, Ed Welburn, discussed future design trends for GM's brands in a wide-ranging interview with WardsAuto.com, ahead of the Philadelphia Auto Show.

Welburn says he has created a high-level design team, reporting directly to him, with the goal of sharply focusing the design philosophy for each brand.

How are the brand design themes evolving? Here are a few clues:

Cadillac - a bold statement, with a high level of sophistication, not bland or boring. The new CTS sedan will kick off the evolved Cadillac look.
Saturn - a European theme tied to the Opel brand
Buick - very sophisticated for its market segment. A premium American design, refined and well-appointed.
Pontiac - sporty, youthful and agile design that says "seductive performance"
GMC trucks - "industrial precision"
Chevy trucks - a "heavy-duty" signature
Saab - will get a strong jet aircraft identification
Chevrolet - includes performance as a key element, but with designs regionalized to suit Chevy's global markets.

I drove to my local Pontiac dealership yesterday, just to see if they had any Solstices. The sales rep told me they have 10 coming in, but they are all spoken for. He informed me that unlike most of the other Pontiac dealers, they are not charging customers more than MSRP - have to applaud that! I may just go back and put my order in and wait.

I like the Saturn = Odpel thisnk..that is what Ford should do with Mercury..

And I agree with MTB... the new Full size Gm SUV's might actually sell very well after ford failed to make a major upgrade..

I agree that the new GM fullsize trucks and SUVs are a big improvement - the only unknown affecting their success will be future gas prices.

Oh, I also ran across this. GM is cancelling the Saturn Outlook, and the GM fans are pretty peeved about it. Check it out - GM Fan Forum

Ford is putting it's money and energy into cars right now, and for one I am very glad.

If it was to be anywhere close as ugly as the Buick Crossover they did the right move.. saved themselves more embarrassment

True, but that $20k price is awfully attractive, especially since it's just gonna be a weekend toy when the weather is nice.
