First Drive.. Dodge Caliber

QUOTE:
In order of increasing engine displacement, estimated EPA mpg cycles for the city/highway are 28/32, 26/30 and 23/26. For comparison, the Toyota Matrix 4WD has a 118-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder and delivers 26 mpg city/31 mpg highway.

WHOAT!?!?!?!? I have 160 HP 2.3l and get 28/32 EPA (25/35 rear life)

Hmm..

more quotes:

In terms of acceleration, we can only describe the Caliber as adequate. The SXT was about what we expected but, oddly, the R/T didn't seem any quicker than the SXT. A subsequent check of the Caliber's specs indicated that the R/T actually has a worse power-to-weight ratio than a 2.0-equipped SXT. Blame the added weight of the 4WD system. For driver interaction and fun, we think the hatchback to beat is still the Mazda 3.

The 2007 Dodge Caliber's arrival, slated for this spring, doesn't include parades and fireworks. Unlike Chrysler's PT Cruiser's debut, the Caliber is entering a segment that already has many established players. That the Caliber is competitive is testament to its quality and features.

Dodge has all the basics right, and the Caliber is a solid car for the average buyer. But our initial impressions were dampened by the lack of driving excitement. If the Caliber were a Buick, this feeling would be a nonissue. But this is Dodge we're talking about, home of the Viper and the Charger SRT-8. Performance-oriented hatchback buyers will likely want to wait at least until the five-speed manual R/T becomes available, and preferably for the SRT version.

it is a small tall wagon like Vibe..

avtually the Vibe/Matrix twins are the closest to its proportions..

other direct competitors: PT Cruiser and HHR.. and possibly all other compacth hatches such as Mazda3 5door, Focus ZX3 and ZXW, Spectra5, Suzuki Aeiro, Forenza wagon and Reno.

It will be twinned with Jeep Compas, and cousined by the upcoming new Evo from Mitsubishi

The interior looks just like a Chevy Equinox.

Wow I kept looking at the pictures and noticed it has a cooler in the glovebox, an Ipod holder which connects to the stereo, and speakers in the tailgate that flip down when it's open so you can play music outside the car. Pretty sweet little things.

Eh, I suppose its alright. People bash on the neon, it was a great little car, in the first generation anyway. After you replaced the headgasket that exploded at 60k miles, it was rock solid, I'm driving it again while the SVT is in the shop, clutch grabs great at 140k, averaged around 36mpg, gearing kinda shoots it in the foot but 129ft-lb moves a 2300lb car alright. Steering feel is peerless, doubt me if you like but I dont think many people here have driven an old Neon, the SVT's is a numb tiller by comparison. Its a fun car to hammer on, cause you can hardly get it above 60mph. I'm past that before I can blink in the SVT.

I'll probably tell my dad to test a Caliber when the jetta kicks off, he can get it cheap with a 5spd, both requirements. Looks alright to my eyes, but I bet its got no feel though, no soul.

Just the way it is shaped, it always looks so big in pictures. If you had told me that it was a mid-size SUV, I would have believed it.

I see the future..... Sonic Blue ZXW vs Caliber SXT...

Thanks but I don't need another wagon. I like the chill spot in the dash and the cargo area seems nice at first... however I can tell you that things SLIDE on hard vinyl. I prefer cutting down rubber bed mats that NO manufacturer has even considered. YAY mods.

It looks like a mini Durango...
