2006 H. Accord Hybrid: higher price lower MPG

From Edmunds.com:
Quote:
Honda Raises Prices, Lowers MPG on 2006 Accord Hybrid
Date posted: 02-04-2006

The 2006 Accord Hybrid has a higher weight, a higher price, and slightly lower horsepower and gas mileage numbers, Honda says.

TORRANCE, Calif. The redesigned 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid gets a face-lift and an increase in price on both models, the company has announced.

Pricing starts at $31,540, including a $550 destination charge, for the base Accord Hybrid; models equipped with a navigation system start at $33,540, including destination a price increase of $850 each.

Honda added a standard moonroof and a temporary spare tire to the Accord Hybrid, which added 88 pounds to the vehicle and shifted it into a new EPA weight category, said Honda spokesman Chuck Schifsky. As a result, Honda revised the Accord Hybrid's EPA rating from 29 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway for the 2005 model to 25 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg on the highway for the 2006 model.

Despite the carryover of the car's 3.0-liter, V6 engine, horsepower ratings dropped slightly, too, from 255 horsepower for the 2005 model to 253 hp for the 2006 model. Schifsky said it reflected Honda's voluntarily adoption of new Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) ratings specifications. "We didn't change anything to do with the operation of the vehicle," he told Inside Line.

The Accord Hybrid, now in its second year of production, gets new standard features, including vehicle stability assist. New exterior enhancements include a rear deck-lid spoiler, unique alloy wheels, and heated side mirrors with built-in turn signals. It is on sale now.

What this means to you: Honda won't come right out and say it, but the new fuel-economy ratings on the 2006 Accord Hybrid more accurately reflect real-world results by consumers
Well at 25/34 there is absolutely NO way to justify the $31k sticker on $25k car...

Well since we're addicted to Oil and all I think this Accord, though quite pricey, will do wonders for our Re-hab!

Wow... the new Hybrid Camry is rated at 43 city/37 highway

Looks like Toyota is gonna kick Honda right in the nuts, I guess the Camry has less power though upon reading a little more about it.

yeah what Accord was supposed to be is "the most powerful of Accords, yet fuel efficient" that is why it was built off of the V6, not the i4..

camry - as usual for Toyota is going just for the commercial catch phrase." best mileage in class" leaving performance back in japan...

25/34 is pretty sad for a Hybrid. I mean I know some people go nuts over Prius, but end up with lower results (as with so many EPA estimates) but come on, Starting from 25/34, how could it do in real life?

What does normal Accord get for mileage anyway? I knwo it's bigger than Civic but it isn't a hog I wouldn't think... A $31k hybrid for mileage people could potentially get out of an mtx Focus is absurd.

I seem to remember that the Escape Hybrid got better fuel economy than this Accord... for about the same money though. I believe those were going for about 30K.... I considered it before I saw the price.

OH if you read the article.. Honda changed the way that they report fuel economy... and they did nothing to the motor. In other words.. no more hype, this is what you'll get. I think if that same philosophy was applied to the Focus..... then people wouldn't be complaining when they only got 28 mpg

Yeah I noticed that about the "real world" numbers. That is nice, because as exciting as inflated numbers are, not getting a slap of reality once you've purchased a car is probably better, no?

But I dunno, for a hybrid that isn't a Tank (like, Highlander or something large) I would just expect more out of it? I do believe Escape is about 30k too. I'd Much sooner shell out that kinda cash for an Escape than an Accord. At least Scapes can haul things and other such functions- Accord is just a nice-sized sedan, not real versatile. And of course you get some tax credit for all of them, but I think the max is 2800 for Prius, and everything else is varying #s below that... down to maybe a couple hundred for something... I forget what it was, a truck.

IF my memory isn't too bad, the Escape Hybrid got 36 in town and 32 on the highway with the CVT. Much better than this Accord. However, if we figure in the Ford Fuel Economy Reality Distortion then it really gets around 32 in town and 28 on the highway.

I drove a Duratec 3.0 Freestyle with a CVT.... it averaged between 26-28 on a 900 mile trip. The rpms were down to around 2500 @75 mph. I really liked the CVT.. however, I'm not sure if I'd like replacing it
