what's up with this prius?

i know i should have done a search to see if this has been talked about in the past, but i am too lazy...sorry.
i saw one on the road today for the first time and i thought it was kind of a cool looking/weird looking car. i noticed it was a hybrid.
i was just wondering if any of you could give me some basic info on it. i'd really appreciate it.

(if anyone does actually reply...could i ask a favour?....could you make it kind of simple....i am a car moron! ) thanks........

sure... its a gas electric, it has something like an 80-90 hp gas motor, and an electric motor. it gets anywhere from 50-70 miles per gallon, depending if driving city or highway. the gas motor propels the car from inital takeoff, and then combines with the electric to propel tha car. the batteries are self charging, and charge when decellerating. gets like 450 miles per tank, or something crazy like that. costs around 20g's and savela hella lot on gas(but it is slow as a mother!!!)

You've never seen the Prius on the road before?? That's weird! I see them all the time. They are everywhere out here.

The environmental friendliness of the car is dubious - the mileage Toyota claims it can achieve is rare in real life, in fact, some regular ol' gas engine cars can get close to or equal the mileage of the Prius. Also that huge battery pack in the Prius has to be disposed of eventually, since batteries don't last forever. I don't know if they recycle them or dispose of them in a landfill.

The supposed "savings" in fuel costs over a regular car actually takes so long to accumulate that most owners will never see a savings and would actually be financially better off buying a less-expensive but traditional car like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. In other words, you pay more for the purchase price of the Prius with the idea that you're going to save money on gas, and thus it will be cheaper to own than a regular car, but in reality that savings takes many years to materialize, and most new car buyers don't keep a car that long, they trade it in a few years later for something else. Thus, the car is extremely popular with poseur idiots who think they are doing something great for the environment and are so much smarter and more environmentally conscious than the rest of us... when in reality if they had half a brain they would have realized they could achieve the same results for less money. IMO it's a very trendy car, thus why (for a time, at least) movie stars wanted to be seen in one, instead of a limo.

As evidence that morons who want to be part of the latest trend are buying this car, there has always been a waiting list to buy one, and most owners are paying thousands (sometimes 5,000 to 10,000) more than the list price to get one, TOTALLY blowing away the whole "the increased gas mileage will save me money in the long run" argument. Can you tell I'm not a big fan of the car?

i guess it wouldn't get that much pick-up if you were trying to get onto the highway. i only have a 4 cyl altima, but it has great pick-up when i want to tear ass a bit. my son thinks it's a slow lumbering thing with no power, but it fills my needs.
that mileage sounds fantastic, matthew...and the price is definitely low, considering how much money somebody could save in gas.
i guess it just caught my eye because i saw it was a toyota. and i was sort of intrigued with the look of it.
my very first car was a toyota corolla. it was my baby....it was ugly....some kind of rust color...i bought it off my brother-in-law for $3000.............i think he overcharged me!!! but i did love it so. i'll see if i can dig up a picture of it.
i appreciate your comments, guys.......and also for keeping it simple.

az...my husband and i both have bought cars throughout our lifetime and we always wear them to their last breath. not that we run them into the ground or anything, he changes the oil religiously, takes care of the tire rotations, tune-ups, the whole blasted thing...so maybe we would be the types to actually benefit from the savings on gas.
and that is interesting dgualtie, that the city mpg will be higher.....but i think i can understand why.

Exactly… Hybrid vehicles are relatively expensive. It is not worth it… If an individual is concerned with fuel economy, purchase a Civic or Corolla. The additional amount of money being spend does not benefit the buyer. An individual would save more money purchasing a fuel-efficient gas vehicle
