Ford Just Invested $1 Billion In Self-Driving Cars

Quote:
Ford Motor is betting $1 billion on the world's self-driving car future.

The Detroit automaker announced Friday that it would allocate that sum over five years to a new autonomous car startup called Argo AI, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., and will have offices in Michigan and California.

They're reinventing themselves as a 'transportation' company, to be involved in anything that moves people. Long run planning to NOT end up as a Buggy Whip company.

I don't like being a passenger even when a human is driving, no way in hell I'll let AI drive me around.
I think the concept could be great for Taxis and Busses, but not for a personal commuter.
I wonder how many people will put their children in a car that cannot sense unpredictable situations?
I personally believe that there are major disruptive technologies every few years/decades, but this isn't one of them. Just like wearable tech, augmented/virtual reality, it will always be very niche and never become mainstream.
In 20 years from now I hope you'll remember what I typed here and think, he was right! Lol.

^^^ Where you are located in the World will make a difference.

In the USA these are already being tested as taxis, and in Europe the auto mags mentioned the LACK of self driving safety features as a mark against the imported Ford Mustang. Adaptive cruise control and automated braking along with lane keeping functions are now considered normal features there apparently.

That is very true, I do think it depends on where you are. I also think that there will be a certain degree of autonomy on highways, but it'll never become standard like torque vectoring, ABS etc.
I see the inner city exec drinking the self driving cool aid so they can do a few extra deals in the ongoing pursuit of financial freedom (LOL). So the big congested cities will make use of this tech, and as mentioned, the people carriers.
I'd let my car park itself and collect me again, so it definitely has its uses.

The future in 1935...
Flying cars and Dick Tracy wrist radios.
One never happened. The other did.
Dick Tracy would be amazed at the smart phone.

And where are the 'flying cars'?
So it is really hard to say exactly what the future actually will be like.

Cars fly.

Pretty sure they wasnt expecting cars to be street legal breaking 200 mph.

Saw a car almost fly this morning on the hoenn bridge in milwaukee. The bridge was wet/icey and he was waaaay over the limit.. bounced off the guardrail and almost landed ontop of it.
