Small toolbag with the following:
Bottle of water
Funnel
A few rags
Gloves(leather or mechanics)
Tire plug kit&airguage
Tire inflator
Flaslight
Jumper cables or jumpstarter if it fits
A Leatherman multitool

Takes up about 10-12 in of space.
I usually keep some specialty tool in my cars but I don't ride around in cars old enough to be concerned about breakdowns right now.

I also keep 2 gallons of my Rain-x washer fluid for each car. In my car I keep the rain x glass treatment, Meguiar's detail spray (for bird droppings.) Tire pressure gauge. Assorted car cleaning/detailing towels and rags. Back of the hatch area's quite full o' stuff. Most of all of it is in a canvas satchel that sits upright. I use bungee cord to attach it to the rear seat latch.

I have too much stuff in my car. I'll just go with what I must have.

- 6 ga jumper cables
- folding wheel chocks
- 12v tire inflator/compressor (curse you Interdynamics for selling your inflator business to C-H)
- Tire plug kit
- spare tire and jack kit
- small tool bag (screwdriver, wheel lock socket, etc)

I have a lot more crap in there than that in a plastic milk carton that is tied off. Like my S&K 3/8 ratchet set, a stubby ratchet, and a rolled up metric wrench set that goes from 8 to 32mm, cordless sawzall, cordless drill, my work tool bag with more stuff than most people know how to use. I don't need all of that stuff for the car, but it's in there. The folding wheel chocks were an idea I got from Mazda. In the 80's they used to put those in with the tire change kit. If you think you might be changing a tire with a scissor jack on a hill.... you might want to see about getting some folding wheel chocks from somewhere too. If the vehicle is very heavy, solid chocks would be better.
