The new motor.

I have been searching for a way to get more power in the engine bay of the Trans-Am and here is how it will be done.

1st- Remove and sell the stock 301V8 Turbo, the turbo is of the wrong design and the engines are prone to problems. They also don't really make a lot of perf parts for the motor and hardly make any stock replacement parts.

2nd- This is the fun part! I am going to transplant a Pontiac 400 V8 into it but it won't stop there. I will be adding some Edelbrock heads and intake mani. Also a nice Holley 750 Carb will be going on and a friend of a friend will make the custom headers and exhaust using Flowmaster mufflers and gutted Hi-flo cats. My father has some sort of HP program for the computer and with all of this plugged in, the program says it should produce around 385-400whp and around 380lb/ft of TQ.

The total cost for the build up: $3200

Who want s to donate to the Fund?LOL

Jason, good plan, don't slap me for this, but would a small block chevy fit ( even easier and cheaper to make power with), or do you want to stay pontiac. If so then the 400 is a good choice

Yeah, but... isn't there a story behind this car? It's more of a sentimental thing if I remember correctly. That's why he's working on fixing it up.

Viney, a small block chevy would fit but I would have to change the bell housing on the tranny and also the motor mounts would have to be changed. I can put anything from a 301-400 in it as it is now and it bolts right up. No mount changes, no harness changes. I might have to build a new hood because if the deck height but that is cool. All performance parts for the 400 work on, 301, 326, 350, and 400s. I might actually use a 350 but we will see.

Focusedat50, this is fun money and I have plenty invested in my future as well as in my house fund. I love this car though!

SVT4ME is right. This car has extreme sentimental value. This is my wife's first car and we do not intend on getting rid of it.

Yes it is a 1980, and yes it is old. Honestly though I would rather dump 50 grand in this car than 1 grand in a Del Sol. There are a million Del Sols out there on the roads. How many 1980 T/As are ther? Your way of thinking, EuroZX3Focus, is the reason there are so many muscle cars rotting away in junkyards and backyards. The T/A is a REAL car and although I love my Focus, it is an econobox. Yes it is fun but like I stated about Del Sols, there are a million of them running around on the streets.

Not to be an ass, but you just kinda pissed me off.

Jason, do you have a pic of this car? At the risk of sounding like an idiot........is it the model that was in Smokey & the Bandit?

Good luck on the project.

Kind of. I will take pics later and post them. The Smokey car has the 455 or 6.6 in it and this has the 301V8. I will post pics soon.

No problem. I also figure I can get back some of the motor cost when I sell the engine on e-bay
