Key FOB distance

I have to be within 5 feet of my car for the remote to work. Ive changed the battery, but still same result. Is there fix for that?

I would have guessed the battery too. Do you have a second remote you can switch with? I don't think there is much you can do without getting a whole new remote.

Mine does the same thing. I used the 2nd remote and it isn't any better. You also have to mash the buttons to get it to lock/unlock...oh well I can live with it. My last car didn't even have a remote so I can't complain

Geargrinder, mine was the same way and then 'unlock' stopped working completely. I took the circuit board out and soaked the buttons in cpu cleaner n alcohol. It fixed the buttons but it didnt do anything for the range. Im wonderin if i can do something to the receiver (the brain), like move it or add an antenna.

I know this may sound weird, but hold the fob against your head, then click it. I also notice that when I am in heavily populated areas my fob doesn't work as far. When I am at my house, it can work over 300 feet away as long as I am within sight of the vehicle. But when I go downtown, it will sometimes only work when I am within 25 feet of the car. It must be the interference or something else.

Top Gear proved it so it's an approved method of extending the range.

Maybe it is on the receiving side. Where is the receiver on the car anyway? Does it just use the radio antenna?

I've had experience with other Fords fob range and the Focus is the absolute worst. I've even programed my Focus fob on an Explorer and it works great... through walls and everything, SO I know it's the receiver.

A while back I halfway looked into this, the antenna for the receiver is the GEM (02-04, not sure about 00-01) in the passenger kick panel. There's a thin wire on one of the pigtails dedicated for the fob antenna. I'm no expert on radio electronics, but the remote is 315 mhz and I think a solid core wire "tuned" to the length of 9.37in/23.8cm might make a better antenna. Also the stock antenna is bundled in with the wiring harness, and it might be getting interference from other wires. Just getting it isolated from touching anything else might fix it.
