Engine Life Expectancy

Hi.

I sold my 2000 ZX3 about 9 years ago now. She had about 150k miles on her when I said goodbye.

Now, I have found myself in the position of needing a dirt cheap beater/daily driver and have been looking at 1st gen foci. I have not kept up with the long term reliability of these engines/transmissions since I sold my old car. Given that a car was taken care of, how many miles would you expect a zetec to last (coupled with the dreaded automatic transmission)?

Thanks.

Jordan

Moved this to General Car Chat for you.

This section has the most life expectancy threads, like the 100k Focus one.

I've seen 2-300k reports, so a long life is possible.

Are they very weak? That seems, to me, like pretty low mileage. I have ever owned one vehicle with an automatic transmission, my old Volvo 740 turbo; which has 240k miles and is still going strong. The Volvo gets horrific gas mileage and the wife says it is ugly though.

ATX has a whole lot more places where small damage can bring them down. Not nearly so necessary to 'rebuild the whole thing' as many think though, often they can go back up for less than $100 if you ignore the yank and install price and count parts only.

Biggest hurdle to ATX life is the frequency the fluid was changed. Many do not ever change it at all, only crying once the car starts giving issues as a result of that.

Your Volvo is a beautiful strong independent car and don't need no woman in his life.

I'm not sure I'd bother too much with the autos. The mtx75 is a BEAST.

It depends like any motor, how you take care of it. I have seen a few past the 200k mark and still run really decent. others run like **** and have 90k.
I beat the crap out of my motor, but i check everything and keep up on the maintenance "for the most part" lol 140,xxx miles and still runs great!
If your worried bring the car into a local shop that you know and trust.
have them check it out!
