Starting an argument.

Why do import guys spend thousands of dollars in performance parts for their cars, when if they are lucky they may run a half second to a second slower than a well-driven Mustang GT or Camaro Z28? I mean seriously and RSX costs as much and is around 2 seconds slower. These guys might say "well I'll buy a turbo kit or blower and things will be different!" I say go ahead because they didn't bother to check the prices of blowers or turbos for American muscle. They are almost identical. There are a lot of Mustang blower and turbo kits out there for around $3000 to $3500. The stuff these guys like to blow their wad on costs about the same. Don't get me wrong it is fun to play with these little cars they and we own, but be realistic. Have fun, but be realistic. Don't bash me, just go with the argument...

You make some great points if you ask me. The thing with a lot of people is they want to make the cars unique, well kinda. A lot of people who say this buy stuff because of what it looks like on other cars. I like the idea of having fun with these little cars as long as you realize where your place is in the hierarchy of the car world. I would love to have a mustang as my daily driver but I can't really. I bought the Focus to have as a car that is a good little cool car with the ability to put my kid in without breaking my back to get them in the back seat. I plan on modding the car but not to race and try to compete with the V8s. I am doing it so that driving the fun little car is just that much more fun.

I agree, but aren't truly fast road-race and rally cars rear wheel or all wheel drive. Also, suspension parts cost the same no matter what the car unless you are talking about some exotic.

This thread is not meant to piss anyone off, it is meant to make us think about those people (especially ricers) who are unrealistic about some areas (and cars) of import performance ('cuz don't get me wrong, RX7's and Supras can be made truly bad-ass [but are expensive to get and modify]).

Well for one thing the RSX has a very nice interior and the Type S which costs 22K comes standard with everything, no options at all. A fully loaded Mustang GT isn't gonna be 22K. Now as far as performance goes, there is one mod that just about every modded RSX has and that's the Hondata ECU that and an intake and better rubber will put the RSX in the mid to high 14's. The ECU gives it about 15hp I think but the main thing is that it raises redline to 8600 rpm so they can stay in VTEC longer. It can do this because they have S2000 intake valve springs and the RSX Type R exhaust valve springs. As far as handling the SVT Focus would kill it and have a better ride.

But with someone who can drive, the Mustang runs 13.7s and has a lot more potential. I get your point, I am just stating that a lot of import guys are unrealistic. And don't quote Motor Trend or some other mags accell data. They have been driving too many torqueless cars to know how to get a good time out of something with some low-end. Look at data from mags like GM high Tech Performance, or Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords etc. Again, I am not bashing import cars, there are some nice ones, I am just talking about realistic expectations.

I pretty much agree with your original statement, as well as jisturms comments. There is a reason F1 cars are rear wheel drive. I often look at the top class in any form of racing to see what works. This is where the REAL money and technology is, if it works they have it, if it doesn't work they don't ( unless the rules say otherwise).
Anyway, I own a quick mustang and a focus like others on here, I put nitrous on my focus, why? to make it more fun to drive and suprise a few "ricers", anyway, will it beat my mustang....NO But my wife can drive it to school and its cheap on gas, and ALOT of fun for the money.

I see your point, these guys are like , well if I ad a turbo and such I'll be this fast and can beat a stock mustang..TRUE...most guys with mustangs aren't stock..DUH!, We put blowers and nitrous on our stangs , too ( I wonder how I know that???..lol)

Good case in point...I have a friend who works at my local speedshop. '92 civic with a b18 turbo in it, Fast car, alot of fun to drive....still slower than my mustang...His civic would probably run 11's but he is beyond the limit of the front tires, and he runs good tires. So he is now bumping into a limit he really can't do anything abot ( on the street) The car has run a 12.4, which I think is bad-a$$ for a daily driver civic, and it is fun to light the tires at 40-50 mph on boost. But the local guys with the ten second camaro's ... he should avoid racing them..Both cars have their pluses and minuses, and thats what makes it all fun

WOW, for once a post without some retard causing problems (yet...). I agree with just about everything said here. Now my .02:

Stock for stock, a good import (or sport compact car, what have you) will handle as well as or better than a comparable domestic. Now, I'm not saying that a stock civic will outhandle a Corvette, let's be realistic. But, my SVTF will outhandle a stock camaro or GT (an ex-cobra friend of mine claims his SVTF will outhandle his last cobra). There are even claims of an SVTF out-slaloming a Z06. I haven't tried, but let's just go on the premise...In the end, my 'compacts' can comfortable take 3 or 4 people on a weekend roadtrip with all their stuff, get good gas mileage, and still run/handle with the rest of them. It really all depends on what you are looking for in a car. I like the nimble feeling associated with small cars. Modify them, and it gets even better. I have no aspirations of modding a domestic only to be possibly dissapointed.

I'm really big into VWs, too. Take a look at www.vwvortex.com and you'll see what kind of following they have. If you want more, go to Waterfest in Englishtown in July. You'll probably never believe that that many VW's made it to the states, and are let alone modified. They have a cult following (for better or worse...) and it is an intersting scene. That 'association' is enough for some people to care less about the bottom line and simple enjoy making their cars better than how they came.

Personally, I hate ricers. Still, nothing makes me happier than seeing a honda/toyota/ford/vw outrun a mustang/camaro...it really all depends on what you like. I'm not out to be the fastest on the street, but I am out to have fun with what I have. IMO there are alot of other people out there with similar views as mine that may be seen as 'ricers' by domestic owners because we put money into cars that don't have the 'potential' theirs do. Oh well. It's all about a passion, and that passion varies from person to person. Just think, many of the ladies (and other people, I can't discriminate) us car guys drive by think we're ALL stupid for putting large amounts of money into any car....
