just curious....

dont know if anyone would be able to answer this, or if it'll even make sense, but i'm bored, and sometimes when i'm bored i get stupid things stuck in my head.

anywho, here it goes... lets say a car company makes a really small v6 engine, say 2L ( i dont think anyone makes 'em that small...). hypotheticly speaking, with all other things being equal, how would it compare to a 2L 4 cylinder?

The 2.5L duratec V6 is a great engine, displaces the same amount as the I4 in the nissan SE-R.

What do you mean by comparison?

I'm wondering how they would compare in HP, torque, pick up... whether one would offer better lower / high end power than the other... i'm obviously not looking for specific numbers, just if a company were to make 2L 4 cylinder, and an otherwise identical 2L 6 cylinder (dont know if that would be possible with all the variables in an engine, so hypotheticly speaking..) how they would compare performance wise.

I have the 2.5L DURATEC V6 in my Contour and with a set of SVT Cams, and SVT TB, Hiflo Y-Pipe, K&N Panel Filter and Plugs and wires, the HP jump was pretty awesome. I think the Stock motor makes 165 HP and a guy on Contour.org estimated that mine is making around 180-185. Runs like a raped ape too!

I believe it is a 1.8L engine.
I have also wondered this. The 4 cyl would have more valves per cylinder, which is good. I think the V6 would come out on top. Why would we have V6s or V8s if 4 cylinders is enough? Why have 4 if we could have a 8.2 L inline 2 cylinder?

An 8.2L 2cyl. would have pistons the size of watermelons. Big things don't reciprocate very fast, very well. That motor wouldn't have a very high redline, and thus, no *usable* power. You would also need MONSTER balance shafts. I know you were just theorizing, just thought I'd expand on it.
