Transmission problem - maybe?

I just joined this forum recently when I found it. But of course soon after my car is starting to do crazy things. I got a 2001 ZX3 auto transmission. I'm afraid to drive it. On my way up from NY to CT I felt like the car was responding very sluggishly. Normally the acceleration response is very immediate but on my way up it just felt too smooth. It was having trouble getting over 50 and when it did the gear did shift it wasn't very smooth. Then in the middle of the highway my car stop responding to the gas pedal. No matter how much I stepped on it, the RPM and the SPEED slowly went down. I pulled over and restarted the engine and it worked fine. Still not normal, it was still sluggish but it would move. I hope this is something simple like low transmission fluid or something but I would imagine I would get a light. This is really scary and I'm afraid that the engine or transmission will just crap out in the middle of the highway. Has anyone heard of the this problem? Will a dealership fix this? I bought it used last year and it has 45k on it. Am I screwed?

Kinda sounds like a fuel problem. For starters try changing out the fuel filter.

Has the maintenance manual been stamped or is there any indication of a 30k service being done?

Is the fuel filter something easy to replace?

When I bought there was no documentation with the car: owner's guide, service manual etc...

if you have no record of any work being done to the car, then you may want to bring it to the dealer and have a tune up done or something...

As far as the filter replacement goes, Im not sure I have not done it on a foci - but Ford is noturious for making the consumer take it back to the dealer to do some of these minor repairs. You may need special tools to take off the filter. I know you had to with early and mid 90's Ford's. Not sure about todays Ford.

Exclamation Fuel Filter!

Yo I just got a letter from Ford today telling me that they're working on a new Fuel Filter design for Foci "Late Jan 2004" and it talks about hesitation or even complete power loss. If you have minor problems they want us to wait to replace at the end of Jan. If the problem is fuel like yours could be and is that bad they'll fix it for free and then maybe want you to do it again when the "new model filter" is made. But I think it's kinda cool I know I've felt hesitation at times. Hope that helps gonna start a new thread on this letter too.

Was this notice for the Fuel Filter or the Fuel Pump?

I remember seeing a recall about the fuel pump, not the filter.
