Ford plans a mega-powered, M3-beating Focus RS

OMG! There is no justice for Ford North America!

FOCUS RS GOES INCANDESCENT
Ford plans a mega-powered, M3-beating RS

Ford Focus RS: hottest of the lot? It looks likely that the forthcoming Focus RS will have up to 350bhp and 332lb-ft of torque from a high-pressure turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, driven through all four wheels. That's more than the current BMW M3's 343bhp and 269lb-ft.

According to Autocar, Ford execs are considering a plan to install the Volvo-developed engine in the RS, which is due out in 2007. The unit is an aluminium block, four valve-per-cylinder powerplant weighing just 180Kg.

Three versions will be built:

3.2-litre naturally aspirated with variable cam timing for inlet valves only, producing 235bhp at 6,000rpm and 236lb-ft of torque at 3,500rpm
3.0-litre low-pressure turbocharged with variable cam timing on all valves, producing 285bhp and 295lb-ft.
3.0-litre high-pressure turbocharged with variable cam timing on all valves, producing 350bhp and 332lb-ft.

The added power would put the RS at the top of the European hot hatch power ranks, and gives it massively more power than the ST, with its 2.5-litre engine making 217bhp and 236lb-ft of torque.

Bodywork modifications include vents in the bonnet and an additional chin splitter.

The only piece of the jigsaw still missing, according to the report, is the right gearbox to handle all that grunt...

from channel4.com...

When Ford launched its 220bhp Focus ST at the Geneva show, company officials were keeping schtum about an even hotter RS version in the pipeline. But now we've caught the flagship model undergoing cold-weather testing. Whilst the ST, which arrives in late 2005, gets 220bhp from Volvo's turbocharged five-cylinder 2.5-litre engine and is more powerful than the previous-generation Focus RS (200 bhp), the RS will be quicker still, with the T5 unit tuned for a good 250 bhp-plus and fitted in combination with the Volvo AWD system.

Like its earlier namesake, and forebears such as the Sierra RS Cosworth, expect the latest RS to take its inspiration from the newest Ford WRC car, which makes its debut in 2006. The previous Focus RS got many race-spec parts - Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes, Sparco seats, OZ Racing alloys, a Garrett turbocharger and AP clutch to name a few - so we'd expect this top-dog Focus to bring much of the rallying experience to the road. We don't predict a tacky bodykit and a huge wing, though: like the previous RS, it will probably remain reasonably understated.

If more Americans bought small cars, the demand for them would be up and we would get cool shit like this. But no. Everyone wants V8s' and trucks. Oh well, maybe one day America will see the light.

I read about this car earlier, I believe it was the same article, the pictures look familiar. Remember that the M3 they are comparing it to is on it's way out, the new M3 is going to have a V8 instead of the traditional inline six... but I guess you could still go hunting for older M3 models.

Hang in there, things are slowly changing. Go down to your local Ford or Chevy dealer and look at what is sitting on the lot, and what is actually selling.

It's taken a few years, but we now have the Subaru WRX and STI, the Evo, the SRT-4, the RSX-S, R32 GTI, RX8, Cobalt SS, and the Sky and Solstice coming soon. There are rumors of a new Supra, and the already unveiled Lexus supercar, it's only a matter of time before Ford wakes up.

None of the cars I listed were for sale before MY 2001. It won't take long.
