Angry selling my focus question

Hi All-
I am going to graduate school and cant afford to keep my car. The car is not fully paid off yet. Does anyone know the procedure for getting the title for the car? I cant afford to pay it off before I sell it. Thanks
Cara

You cant get the title until its paid off. If you sell it you will have to transfer the titile to the buyers name. If the buyer pays for it in full he/she gets the title put in their name. In most states you simply go to the DMV to do this.

Usually the way it goes is the buyer pays you the selling price and you give them the car. The buyer generally has 30 days to get it registered in their name which requires either the title or a lien release from the lienholder. You take the proceeds from the sale and pay off the vehicle. The lienholder then sends you the title (if you are in a title holding state) which will be signed indicating the lien has been released. You then sign the title over to the buyer and they take it to the DMV to have it registered and titled in their name.

I would suggest filling out a bill of sale also for your own records/protection.
