Question Putting automatic tranny in neutral at red lights...

Hey guys. I was wondering if its ok to flip the focus' automatic transmission to neutral when at red lights. I do that most of the time and Im just wondering if you guys think its better to just leave it in gear or switch back and forth.

As long as the RPM remains at idle when you shift back to "D". Thats what I started doing after I had my tranny replaced off warranty. It helps the tranny fluid cool off a bit when at those long lights... but if its one of those stop and go things, its not worth it.

Yeah, just at the long lights I do it. I never hit the gas while putting it in gear.

whew.... When I read the thread title I thought "Here's someone about to get flamed." b/c I thought you were talking about putting it in neutral and revving up and acting like you have a stick.

a friend of mine does it at the longer lights, and it works fine. it drops the RPMs, letting the engine relax, and it helps cool it off, like cpyder said.

Lol yeah thats what I thought to. Knew a kid in HS with v6 atx mustang that used to do it, I let him know when I caught him at lights. Putting it in neutral would probably help the fluids cool down( said above) but its probably more hassle than it's worth.

I don't notice my rpms fall considerably (hardly at all) the couple times I've done it, so even on long lights (sitting > 2 minutes) I just leave it in OD... figure it's cool enough just setting there anyway... I dunno.
