I test rode a SVT and ST tonight

Been searching for a more exciting ride lately. VW GTI is hell of too much money so I went back to good old Ford for a bargain. The dealer to my delight had a 03 SVT with only 16k on it to test ride!!

I had tested the St many times and loved its real world powerband and excellent torque. So going in on the SVT test ride I knew it was a different car but stil gave it a chance I would like it enough to buy one.

Well I dont, the ST is way more relaxed in its business and not at all much slower. The clutch and shifter felt slicker also. I love the St. Too my suprise the editors of Motor Trend picked it last in a shootout with the Mazda 3, Mitsu Lancer Ralliart, Scion tc , Mini coopers. Well its shows you gotta test ride these damm things and not take some magazine's opinion.

So my only choice for a upgrade now is the ST

I've never driven an ST, but I researched them a little bit a few months ago and was disappointed at the lack of features and options compared to the SVT, to get one close to how an SVT comes would make it a pretty expensive car. And still don't care for the new front styling or the "square" dash.

And to be fair to the SVT, the torque numbers between the two cars are not that different (145 vs. 154) - what is different is the transmission, the SVT has a 1st gear that kills launches. The transmission in the ST is the traditional MTX-75 5-speed which is perhaps a better setup for stop and go street driving.

Youre right the SVT has to launched with some skill.

And I have test driven the Mazda 3s, Lancer Ralliart and the Focus is just more fun.

I now have 1,500 miles on my ST, and I absolutely love it - the tranny/shifter is snick-snick slick :D and the engine has plenty of power with an astounding range of RPMs!

No complaints here!

I have ridden in both a SVT & a ST.

I do like the exterior and interior features of a SVT much better then the ST. But the ST has since grown on me. I'd much rather have a ST Oh wait. I do...LOL
