Ignition switch problem

I have a 2000 Ford Focus SE. Recently I have had a problem inserting my key into the ignition switch. Once I manage to "wiggle" and push fairly hard the key will go in fully and I able to start my engine and turn it off. Extracting the key is no problem. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be and whether it can be resolved with say squirting a little light oil or even WD 40 into the switch to lubricate it?

It's a common problem with the Focus, part of the ignition switch will probably have to be replaced. Run a quick search and you can find tons of threads on the active and archived forum.

Problems with the ignition key cylinder seem to be fairly common on early Focus models. You may want to check with a dealer on this: it may worsen to the point that the car becomes inoperable. There was just a thread on here recently about someone whose car had the steering column lock up. You may need to have the cylinder replaced - not necessarily the whole ignition switch assembly, just the part that the key fits into.

yeah the focus in general has had lots of problems with the ignition switch. I haven't seen any 2003's with the problem but have worked on '00-02 with the ignition switch problem. all of them were repaired by replacing the lock cylinder and only one was locked up. i had to make a service call on that one.

I would recommend having it repaired before it locks up the column.

Thanks everyone. My Ford dealer replaced the ignition cylinder which was causing the problem. So far so good!
