New member with questions...

Hey everyone, new here and I hope you can help. I am seriously considering purchasing a new 2005 Focus ZX5 SES in a few days. I would like to know how the heaters work in these cars, i.e. fairly quick to heat up the interior on a cold N.E. winters day? I notice that the SES I am looking at has the 'winter package' with heated seats. (sounds nice)
I have never owned "4-banger" and not sure how 'heat efficient' these small engines are.

Also would like to know what kind of 'real world' gas mileage to expect, w/ auto trans. Mostly highway and country back road driving.

Also, I know the early model Focus's had a lot a mech. problems...do you feel the 2005's are better?

I am purchasing this car for my wife, she test drove the 2005 ZX5 and loves it!

Would appreciate your oppinions....thanks.

I own a 2000 and my heater heats up pretty quickly. On average I get about 30 mpg on the highway. The new Duratec engine are fairly reliable so I think you're going to be happy with your purchase.

Pretty sure the 05s are better than the early models. They haven't been out that long, but no recalls yet. If she doesn't mind the older body style, you could look for an 04, it's pretty much foolproof since it was the same for so long, it seems to be reliable. But then it's hard to get the options you want, etc... I have a 2003 with the Duratec engine (like all 05s have) and its a little beast. I've never beat on it, but its given me almost 2 years of stress-free life. Its alternator died with like 2000 miles, so I think it was just a bad fluky part, but NOTHING since, which I can handle!

The Focus heats up pretty darned fast, IMO. I don't let it sit and idle at all, even after COLD nights, but I just drive it nice til the Heat needle (forgetting its real name right now) is at normal temp... and that doesn't take more than a couple minutes. MUCH faster than my stepdad's Taurus or Mom's Escape (both V6). I'd personally suggest the Winter Package. Mine doesn't have it, but the defrosting side mirrors and butt-warmer seats would be pretty nice on a frigid Jan. morning! And the heat once on is VERY warm, I can never complain about being cold once the engine's toasty!

Next, gas mileage. My car's travelling varies a lot but in general I'd say I go 60/40 highway/residential roads. I've kept a log of my gas fillups for squite a while and it averages out to 25.6 mpg - worst ever was dead winter in the city and that was 19, but it never went near that again. And best was 28.9 I think, pretty high for an auto! So mileage, I think, is good - though I forget what the sticker on my car told me it would get. Also, I have a serious lead foot, so if your wife drives slower or more smoothly hers will be a bit better too.

Good luck with your decision, it is a very fun car to drive... lots of pep and a good feel for the road, IMHO. Let us know how things work out!

11K miles on my '05 ST and so far so good, zero real problems. It warms up very quickly in the winter (Michigan) and the heated seats are awesome. I drive my car pretty aggressively and am now getting around 28 mpg avg, city/highway combined. Haven't really taken an extended highway drive, but I would think I can pull 30-32 with it. I think you'd really enjoy the Focus, good luck on your purchase !
