Traffic Light Changer

Technically known as MIRT(Mobile InfaRed Transmitter)

I just saw this report on them on CNN. They said that they're legal in most states and no legistation is in place currently to stop you or me from buying and installing one.

Anyone else heard of these things ?

Will it create chaos?

my city has them, changes the lights to green for firetrucks and ambulances. $300 is alot to not have to wait at a traffic light. i`m sure they will sell alot on the net and then the states will come up with laws to make them illegal. every car should have one..... ;-p

The problem will be when two people approach from perpendicular angles to the intersection and both activate the MIRT. Hopefully the traffic light systems are smart enough to not accept multiple requests from MIRTs within a certain time period. If that's the case, then there shouldn't be TOO much mayhem. Just a general sense of "Hey! That's not fair!" -- Road rage may spike for a while.

I just heard about this the other day. It's hard to imagine how on earth traffic could possibly flow properly if everyone was zapping the lights. That said, I have often joked to students who have been stuck at seemingly never-ending red lights about how great it would be to have one of those. "Driver's Training, coming through... make way for the Driver's Training car..."

If they already don't have some sort of timer that triggers when a MIRT is detected, then they didn't even think that 2 emergency vehicles might approach an intersection approximately at the same time. I hope our traffic light engineers were smart enough to think about that...

Don Johnson has one of those. Does anyone know where I can get one of these and how much it costs?

Emergency vehicles have something called a radio and a dispatcher to help avoid collisions such as this. Oridinary citizens do not.

Also, use of these devices is illegal in CA:

21464. (b) No person shall use, and no vehicle, other than an authorized emergency vehicle, shall be equipped with, any device capable of sending a signal that interrupts or changes the sequence patterns of an official traffic control signal unless that device or use is authorized by the Department of Transportation pursuant to Section 21350 or by local authorities pursuant to Section 21351.

Thank you Officer Guerro. I guess I'm SOL on that one - still have to wait at long red lights with little pukefaces whose necks I'd like to wring...

im sure it wont be long, if not already, you will have to have proof you are fire ems or pd to get one, just like you have to do when buying anything such as even a jacket which says fire ems or pd from alot of suppliers, these only work in towns where they havetherecievers setup, alot of them dont, and they have been around for awhile
