2006 Ford Explorer gets new face and an optional Mustang V8

Sweet!!

Exploring its Options: 2006 Ford Explorer gets new face and an optional Mustang V8

BOB GRITZINGER
Posted Date: 5/4/05 AutoWeek

When you see this new face on the 2006 Ford Explorer this fall, remember to look behind the grille for whatís really important: a new, higher-output 4.6-liter V8. Like its Mercury Mountaineer sibling that debuted at the Chicago auto show in February, the new-look Explorer gets an optional V8 lifted directly from the 2005 Mustang.

Variable valve timing and three valves per cylinder boost the 4.6-literís output to 292 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, up from 239 hp and 282 lb-ft in the two-valve V8 it replaces. The V8 Explorer also gets a new six-speed automatic transmission.

For those who donít like change, the base Explorer will still come with the same 4.0-liter, 210-hp, 254-lb-ft V6 and five-speed automatic.

All current info says the Mustang V8 will be offered in the 2006 Mercury mountaineer, as well.

Here are some pics of the 2006 Mountaineer, from the Chicago Auto Show in Feb.

The 4.6 3V goes in the Explorer and Mountaineer now. But it has a different intake then the Mustang to give it more low end torque. I wish J Mays would quit taking his design ques from Audi/VW though. Is it just me or does the grill look the same as the one on the Audi's? A6, A8, take your pick.

Looks like the front of the new VW Jetta, as well.

Hrmph! Did Ford borrow that front end from the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta? Look at the chrome grille; it is a very similar design.
