2006 Focus 12v power outlet

Hello everyone,

First time poster on here, actually just joined. I have a 2006 silver, unleaded fuel, Focus Titanium.
I'm currently laid up, after surgery to remove a brain tumour, Ops went well, and I'm recoverying, staying with my sister, getting spoilt rotten!

Anywho, on to my question, my focus is sitting outside my house, probably for quite a few weeks, and I'm worried about the battery draining.

I have seen those solar panel trickle chargers, that you plug in through the 12V power outlet, and was wondering, if anyone could recommend one I could buy? ie, power output, voltage, etc. amazon seems to have some.

But my main question, and it may seem a bit stoopid, would this actually work, does my power outlet connect to the battery when the ignition is off, and the car is 'dormant' for want of a better word?

As I say, new boy poster, and if this is asked every week, I apologise!

Hey John,

The easiest way to tell if your 12v socket is 'switched' or not, is to plug something into it with the key off! If one of those tenders would work through the socket, then you would be able to plug in a device and use it even when the car is off.

Some of those solar chargers do standard leads to just wire right to the battery. That may be an option as well. Or, you could take the battery out, bring it inside, and plug it in to a standard wall charger (just make sure it's an automatic battery tender type charger). You don't want the battery to drop below 12.4v. That's the name of the game. Doing so will cause internal corrosion (called sulfation) in the battery. There are lots of ways to accomplish that!

Thanks for that, Im thinking maybe clip the charger to the battery directly, then take the panel in out the bonnet, close it on it, take the solar panel to the dash, and close the door on the wires, should be fine, methinks.
Then lock the car up and leave it trickle charging til I get back to it in a few weeks.

Does anybody have any idea of the Voltage, or 'grunt' I should aim for, with the charger, assuming a few weeks of leaving the car idle?
