Which Focus to buy?

I currently have a 96 Saturn SL2 5 speed getting close to 250k miles which I'm looking to replace as my winter car/grocery getter. I have a 13' ST for spring/summer/fall.

I am not as familiar with the earlier focus's and their engines and problems. I've tried to do some reading on the forums but am a little confused as to which is generally considered the most durable with the fewest problems. From my understanding it generally sounds like the Duratec engine over the Zetec over the SPI. I'm looking to spend maybe $3000-4000 and hopefully get something a 5 speed that will last me a number of years. Suggestions/help/comments appreciated. Thank you

Don't just focus on a Focus since for a few grand there might be better choices out there for a grocery getter.

I'm looking for a domestic car, manual, that has a reputation of good gas mileage and low problems with regular maintenance. My Saturn has done well, and I was debating between that or a Focus..Do you have another suggestion?

I had a 2000 Saturn sl2 5-spd. Very nice around town car though I did do a couple trips with it. Got 42 mpg average on one cruising steady state at 70 mpg.

duratec would be ideal but a zetec is fine too. avoid the spi, thats all.

Ive seen a lot more sedans and wagons with rocker panel rot vs the hatch, keep that in mind

Duratec has a timing chain so no need to replace like a Zetec has timing belt.I have 133,000 miles and no issues on my 06.My neighbor had a 01 wagon timing belt broke at 190,000 miles he sold it with 235,000 when fuel pump went out. Nieces 01 with SPI dropped the valve seat at 140,000 This is common for the spi.

A Zetec would work for you great. I wouldn't be afraid of a Zetec w/ a belt. It would depend on what the prices are around your area.
