Only 275 hp? No 2.5? Eh... whatever. I don't see how people are going to be convinced to "upgrade" to 25 less hp, 2 fewer cylinders, and about 100 lbs lighter. Besides, I'm not entirely convinced of the ecoboost idea as far as fuel economy. Typically, if you make the power, you must use the fuel. It's not like Ford is pioneering use of something that would reduce drag on the engine like a solenoid operated valves or spherical rotating valves.

The MKC has 275 HP. Of course the Mustang will have more.

Would a (Mustang) 5.0L V8 that is generating 20 HP (for example, if you were cruising) use the same amount of fuel as a 2.0L Ti-VCT engine that is putting out 20 HP?

I've been thinking the same thing ever since the Eco boost has come out in all it's forms. As long as people have a light foot and stay out of boost you should easily get the economy, but once you put your foot into it, it's all over for fuel economy. That's with any turbo engine though unless it's so tiny that it needs boost just to move the car, might as well put a fuel efficient non turbo motor in at that point IMO.

Well the Corvette could do 29mpg cruising on the highway.. The engine at 65mph in top gear is basically near idle.
That is with around 400 to 500hp on tap.

Generally the fuel is used with a weight/drag/speed sort of equation.
So if the engine is as efficient, and the body has about the same drag.. Both should use the same gas to go the same distance.
Gearing is a BIG part of it though..
I know my 5 speed is not doing the best at over 60 mph due to the gearing being rather high.. With a seven speed manual.. And two high gears only for freeway cruising and such that they WILl bog on hills.. One could do way better mpg with the low rpm possible at speed. (kind of like the Corvette)

Some power made IS wasted spinning the engine faster than needed

I'd like a sixth speed on my Focus - or a taller 5th speed. I short shift in town to conserve and use the cruise on the freeway. We're into winter now and I have nowhere to get in a hurry.

This reminds me of the top gear episode where Clarkson gets someone to drive a Prius around the track as fast as possible. While he follows the Prius in a M3. All he has to do is keep up. The prius with a 1.5 the M3 with a 4L V8. The prius got 17mpg the bmw got 19mpg.
