Who knows?
Some rumors would suggest that the ecoboost won't make it into the Mustang until 2016 along with revised 5.0 and 3.7 to fit the new 10 speed transmissions.

Another reason its surprising to me that this will be placed in a Lincoln so soon with the standard 6 speed.

I still hold that Ford will not change the output of the 2.3 when it goes into the Mustang.

Another thing you need to consider is that this engine will be a global engine. Pumping more power into it will increase its CO2 emissions and increase the amount of tax you would need to pay in order to own it. The Focus ST has an emission rating of 169g/km so I would assume the 2.3 will be slightly more in its current iteration.

Bumping up the power would likely scare away younger buyers in other countries who are fiercely taxed for performance vehicles. That's not what the Mustang is about.
Ford has announced that the Mustang 2.3L turbo will deliver "more than 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque".

Well, if that's the case then I suppose we won't be getting a Focus RS any time soon.

Why would that be? I thought it was all but a certainty that we would see the RS in 2015/2016?

If they modify the 2.3 to make over 300 hp for the Mustang, it won't make that much power in anything else.

Its the same reason you don't see the 2.0 with 252hp in any other car except the Focus ST or the 1.6 with 197hp in anything but the Fiesta ST. If the Mustang is sold with a much more powerful 2.3, it won't be that powerful in anything else and the 2.3 is more or less the last hope for an RS Focus.

Unless Ford wants to buck the trend and put a generic "company" motor in the RS (which they've never done)

I think they could (and should). Rumors have been for 350 hp for the RS. Without knowing much about the 2.3L, I have no idea how much work it would take to reach that number. Would it be intake/exhaust? Tune? Intercooling? Cam profile? Different turbo? Who knows.

Most of the limitations on the 1.6L and 2.0L are due to the tiny turbos that they use. The 2.3L uses a twin-scroll, but other than that fact I know nothing about it.

Of course there's always the argument that the Mustang should have the most powerful version of the engine. Might make some people upset to know that the lowly Focus has a more powerful 2.3 engine.

We'll have to wait and see.
