looking at a high mileage focus.... anything to look for?

Ive been searching and searching for a focus... all the low mileage ones i find are trashed and look like crap... have looked at a few higher mileage cars that look nice. Looked at a 06 SES tonight with 145K miles.... Looks to be in great shape and the lady has ever service record since new. She just bought it for her daughter who then decided she doesnt like to drive standard so they are selling it. the lady works at the dealership where the car was always maintained and where she bought it. It was a 1 owner car before she bought it in june.

Its a 5 speed and i think the only option it has for the SES are heated seats. Has newer tires and brand new brakes. I plan on an SVT/FRPP suspesnion with EAP wheels.

Car looks like it has zero rust on the underside and probably always garaged. Anything major on these cars to look out for????

Not sure if this problem plagues the MK2's but check for brake fluid leaking behind the clutch pedal. Otherwise I'm not aware of any of the known issues (if any) on the MK2's....

Always do/have a compression test on any used car that you buy. Outside of that, check for clean fluids and leaks under the car, tyre wear, etc.

At 188k my car tested 1-4cyls., 185, 190, 190 and 190. She is tight!

The main issue was the passenger side, which you would be able to tell from either sitting in the car at idle or by looking at the mount for damage/leaks..Not sure sure if the MK2 were prone to that issue but its easy to check.

ok- i experienced bad motor mounts on my dads 02, this 06 seemed to idle nice and smooth - not shake like a harley

Look for water on the passenger floor... Mine leaked like a siv . its the windshield leaking rain in. It is fixable tho

The most common problem has probably already been dealt with, and that's tumble flaps. These are flaps inside the intake manifold that open to increase air volume at high engine speeds. At low engine rpm, the flaps are closed off to increase velocity. When the flaps get old and worn, they make a sound like bad valves. Upon closer inspection using a stethoscope, the valve cover is quiet, but the sound is generated by the intake. Intake manifold replacement is one way to fix it, the other way is to remove the tumble flaps which reduces low end torque.

Hey man... If you roach the engine... They are fairly cheap... I seen duretec motors for as low as 400 on c-list around me... Watch out for rust. Mine was rusting inside the rear doors bad.... And it was an 07

thanks for the replies all-

i went with my buddy who has a repair plate so i could take it for a ride. First thing i noticed was the front end seemed a little looser compared to others i have driven... then on hard left hand turns over a bump sounds like the front ends going to fall out... im thinking a strut or strut mount.

My main concern was the noise under the hood. Sounds like a popping/ backfiring noise when the cars running and the hoods open and you have your ear over the exhaust manifold. I really cant tell if its coming from the manifold of down lower by the flex pipe. I cant hear it on the underside so Im thinking its the manifold. Doesnt really sound like an exhaust leak though.
