The new reviews for the 2014 Corolla are starting to trickle in...

And it does sound pretty. Why this car continues to sell well I will never understand.

Reliability carries huge weight in the eyes of the vast majority of car buyers. Car repairs are a painful process and something that people try to avoid like the plague. For that huge segment of buyers that just need something to get them to and from work in a reliable and comfortable fashion, the Corolla will always be there. Toyota's goal is to be a profitable business, and no reason has presented itself yet to change their model.

While my 93 Paseo and 97 4Runner were some of the best vehicles I've ever owned (still have the 4Runner), my 2003 Camry (4cyl 5spd) was so bad, I swore off the brand. I dumped the car with only 150k miles when we bought our minivan (the 4Runner is going strong at 209k miles).

My parents have a 2006 Corolla. It is a decent car, but boring as hell, which works fine for them. Given my experience with the Camry and what I see from my folks' Corolla, I made the decision to give Ford a try. So far, I'm pleased with my choice.

"which makes the most of the car's 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque"

"the new Corolla is still just a basic compact four-door. Get a Mazda3 or Ford Focus if you want a fun-to-drive small car."

I love that they mention the focus as a fun car :)

The Corollas are historically pretty boring. But boring sells. People don't want a car with great handling and a stiff ride. They don't want something terribly fast and jumpy. As long as it's cheap to own, rides smooth and they can listen to music, most people don't care. It's no different than a dishwasher.

right, its an appliance that works when you need to use it. it will get you from point a to b reliably. We have an '01 Corolla in our family and while it does absolutely nothing for me behind the wheel, its been going strong with out any major issues for over 200k now. Still gets good mpg and the heat/ac still blows hot/cold.

I can't hate the Corolla. For its intended purpose, it's a "good" car. If I want to judge it on incorrect criteria like the internet does, such as "fun to drive" or sporty, of course it's terrible.

It would be like saying an orange makes a terrible hammer. Of course it does, it's a fruit.

Not to mention the older Corollas can be beaten into the ground and still run great. A friend of mine had his until it finally gave at ~250k mi. It was a mid-90's. Same with the Camry.

A friend had a red, well, pink, given it's time in the Texas sun, 1990 Corolla. The profile looked exactly like if you were to ask a child to draw a car. A rectangle, with two smaller ends. We advanced the ignition timing and did an "intake" and raced Honda kids with it. It won more times than I had expected. It even beat an automatic 01 Focus I had as a loaner car.
