The whole MPG battle and advertising it so much needs to stop. I'm not sure if its the EPA or the manufacturers but they should start under reporting mpg. Like some brands do when they understate hp numbers. It seems like every major brand is getting burned by advertising overly high mpg numbers

At least they are offering their customers something to make up for the "mistake"

One of my grandfathers friends gets a check from Toyota every month to offset his fuel costs because of the wrongly reported mpg. It's really out of hand that so many cars are having this issue lately.

I haven't had a vehicle get its rated mileage since we bought our 1997 4Runner (got slightly better than rated until E10 became commonplace). Our 2003 Camry and 2007 Odyssey both got/get well below rated. My Focus will get rated or slightly better with careful driving, but if I drive it like I typically drive, it gets a couple points below rated.

Whatever methodology they use to determine fuel economy numbers is not at all related to how people actually use the vehicles.

That's because the EPA standards for manufacturers to follow aren't realistic.

It's the EPA estimate methodology that screws everything up.
It does not test real world conditions.
Manufacturers are happy to advertise the grossly inflated "EPA estimated mileage" claims.
Consumers get upset and sue.

Might as well advertise "Magic 8-ball predicted mileage".
In today's world, anybody that believes that marketing instead of using any of the hundred different tools to see real world reported fuel economy for a car, is an intentionally delusional fool (with a lawyer)
