2004 SE Sedan with Zetec Engine - Are Zetec Engines Any Good?

I am looking at purchasing a 2004 Ford Focus SE Sedan with the Zetec engine. Its an automatic with 142,000 miles. Have the Zetecs been a decent engine? Any quirks or things outside of routine maintenance that I should look for before I consider purchasing the car?

Also the car was owned by a heavy chain smoker. Any pointers to get that odor out of the car?

Thanks for any input!

Moved to Focus & General Chat, not a "problem" question so it fits better here for chatty answers.

Zetec's have a good rep., no known issues to worry about like the SPI has.

Timing belt replacement falls under maint., if it hasn't been done it's certainly due at that mileage. Fairly involved job, many do serpentine belt/tensioner/idler at the same time, some even add water pump to that list while it's easier to get at.

BTW - Sure it's a Zetec? Lots of Duratec's around the northeast from that year, have one myself.

Luck!

It took me 2 days to get the scent of smoke out of my car when I bought it, get some upholstery cleaner and scrub the heck out of the fabrics, then turn the fan on full and recirculate off and spray a can of lisol into the vent intake under the windsheild.

As for the engine They are great solid little beasts, mine is currently at 122,xxx and I haven't had any problems. Other than regular maintenance and normal wear... Some guys have here have Zetecs well over 200,000, and a few as high as 300,000+... Take care of them and they will take care of you.

PS: Couldn't imagine being a heavy chain smoker, I would think chain smoking it's self would be heavy enough, lol...

pretty solid engines, alotta guys drive em well past 200k. as for odor, my car spent a few years sitting in a barn, and had that smell. still has it some, after 10 months driving. i did a full interior shampoo/carpet cleaner wash three times, and a lot, i mean A LOT of air freshener. one thing I found helpful, pop the vents off and stick some of your favorite scented dryer sheets back there. long scent and picks up the odor pretty well. as long as you want your car smelling like clean laundry, lol
