Worst engine ever thread

Just curious to know what some people consider to be the wost engine ever made.

I nominate the Chevy 2.8

I have not seen one go past 80k miles without needing major work or a complete rebuild. Its slow, unreliable, and noisy.

Not that I'm defending chevy, but there were a few vehicles that were just to damn heavy to be putting that 2.8 in. My old S-10 blazer did OK with the 4.3 liter V6. And it did ALOT better when I was done with the engine.

I vote for (curiously enough) another Chebby engine.
The "Iron Duke" in the Vega. No idea what the displacement was in that horrid 4-banger.
I don't think my buddy ever got more than 10,000 miles out of each rebuild.
Why he continued to rebuild it was beyond me.

I'm putting the Ford/Mazda 2.5 liter V6 found on the Probe, 626, MX-6, and Millenia.

Didn't the Geo metro have a 3-cylinder motor? I'm not sure about the actual displacement, but does it really matter on a 3-cylinder? When I went to Hawaii 13 years ago, that was the only vehicle left to rent for the day. I felt like Mr. Bean in that damn thing. I also want to nominate the 2.9 liter that ford put in the old tempo(gutless gas hog) and ranger. Ford finally did the right thing later on by dropping a 4.0 liter v-6 in both vehicles.

The famous Geo metra, my buddy use to own one. The thing only ran on 2 cylinders. The 3rd cylinder had a crack in the engine block. The thing sounded like crap and I never rode in it because he wasn't sure if it could pull anymore weight. The engine's block cracked in the summer when he put cold water on a hot engine when it was like 100 F outside.

Yep. The GEO metro had a 1.0 3 cylinder engine. It wasnt unreliable, just obviously gutless. You could however squeeze 50 MPG out of it though.

Gotta go with Hotfocus on that. That 2.5 from the Probe and what not was a blowing motor.

Hmmm... on what basis are we deciding it to be one of the worst? I was thinking, my first car was a 1977 Cadillac Eldorado, which had a whopping 425 cu. in. V8. It was a smooth running engine that gave me no trouble, but it only made 180hp out of 425 cu. in. which was pretty pathetic and it got about 6-7 miles to the gallon. It was a victim of the times, it would have been a great engine but it was stuck with some very primitive smog equipment and tuning that really sucked the life out of it. The mid-late 70's was the beginning of harsh smog regulations that automakers tried to meet with some pretty crappy smog controls. You could probably nominate a lot of engines from that era on that basis alone.

Other thoughts... a few years later, the Cadillac "8-6-4" V8 engine that was supposed to de-activate up to half of the cylinders for fuel economy but just plain sucked. Pretty much any 1980's Mopar four-cylinder. I don't care if many of them had turbos, they still sucked - I know, we had a Dodge Lancer. Definitely the "Iron Duke" - what a turd. I know, we had a Buick Century.
